As Saturday unspooled, so did a few news items on the Strip, and sort of near there:
• After spending much of the day rooting for his native England against the United States in the World Cup and bemoaning the faulty hand-eye coordination of goalkeeper Rob Green, Matt Goss announced via his Twitter account that he’d signed a three-year contract extension with Caesars Palace. No other details provided, yet.
Since March the Gossinator has been performing at the renovated Gossy Room at Cleopatra’s Barge, where the new contract can be seen as a moat of confidence. I mean, vote. Vote of confidence. Sorry, it’s late, folks.
• Louie Anderson’s next move is to Bonkerz Comedy Club at Palace Station, which will be renamed the Louie Anderson Comedy Club. Anderson had not drawn the type of business at Excalibur to keep him onstage at the room he shared with “Thunder From Down Under” (but not at the same time) for four years. He starts Sept. 7 in what is expected to be an all-ages, family friendly showcase.
• Rick Harrison, the bedubbed “Shooter” on History Channel’s reality-based show “Pawn Stars,” is making a pair of highly significant media appearances Thursday on CBS. In the morning it’s “The Early Show,” and at night it’s “The Late Show With David Letterman.” In its third season, “Pawn Stars” centers on the uncommon personalities and merchandise at Gold & Silver Pawn on Las Vegas Boulevard just north of Charleston Boulevard.
• I enjoy Cork Proctor. He looks great at age 77 (he turns 78 next month), is sharp as ever and can still hold a room, as they say on the comedy circuit. He wraps at Comedy Stop at Sahara tonight (or Sunday night, if you are reading this tonight, in which case it is Saturday). A line from Friday’s show: “I used to work as a lifeguard at the pool here. True story. That’s about 800 feet from here. How’s my career doing?”
• Donny Osmond’s nationally syndicated radio show is finally moving to Las Vegas in within the next couple of months. It’s syndicated in about 60 cities, but not the city in which he performs, which seems sort of off-kilter to me. Plans are for the DonnyCast to air on KKLZ 96.3-FM weekdays from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.
