Report: ESPN Zone facing the final buzzer at New York-New York

Super Bowl fans gather at ESPN Zone on the Strip on Feb. 1, 2009.

Las Vegas might be Zoned-out.

A report out of Los Angeles, latimes.com specifically, indicates ESPN Zone is pulling out of New York-New York. The story, citing an unidentified source, says that ESPN Zone owner Walt Disney Co. is shuttering most of its chain restaurants, including the outlet in Las Vegas.

Restaurants connected to a Disney property, such as the Downtown Disney retail district in Anaheim, Calif., are to remain open. There has been no official verification that the company does indeed intend to shut down its restaurants in Baltimore, Chicago, New York and Washington, in addition to the franchise at New York-NewYork.

An MGM Mirage official tonight referred inquiries about the future of the restaurant to a spokesman for ESPN Zone. That spokesman responded to an e-mail request for response by saying, “Since their inception, the Zones have served sports fans very well. But from a pure business perspective, the economics have been challenging.”

It is the same statement provided the Times reporter.

ESPN Zone opened in 1998. Its hallmarks are an array of sporting events played out on big-screen TVs, healthy servings of food that might not be good for you but is good nonetheless, and a generous selection of tapped beers. The Vegas outlet has a quite-expansive game area, too, for air hockey and Skee-Ball practitioners.
