We’ve all been there. Seven’s not enough. Nine’s too many.
Eight. Eight is enough.
That’s the case for one-woman Van Patten family Nadya Suleman, who produced a veritable Los Angeles suburb on Jan. 26. Suleman, as has been widely reported, gave birth to octuplets.
As a means of explanation, she said she wanted a “bigger family.” Really? Hell, take mine.
The 1976-’77 UNLV Runnin’ Rebels were known as the Hardway Eight – until now. I mean, eight kids in one turn? Suleman is just one conjugal visit from a full batting order. I’ll bet her next offspring will be named “DH.”
Actually, Suleman is now a mother to a total of 14 children, and for each pregnancy she has used the West Coast IVF Clinic in Beverly Hills. I wonder if this facility has a sign in front boasting, “Millions and Millions Served.” I wonder, does the staff there get kickbacks from Pampers?
These numbers – 14 total, eight in one shot – beg questions. Like, “Why so many babies all at once?” and, “A game of Crazy Eight, anyone?” This was no accident. Suleman said the octuplets were an unexpected result of six embryos implanted, or “transferred,” by her as-yet unidentified doctor at McBabyLand (reports are the physician is Dr. Michael Kamrava, who, based solely on this incident, can be considered the father of our country).
Suleman said that in her most recent pregnancy, she expected merely twins. Oh, she got twins -- four sets of ’em. In VegasVille we call that a jackpot. Suleman hit the MegaBucks of maternity. She’s been pregnant five times previously and in each case six embryos were transferred, with the sperm donor identified as a friend of Suleman – an uncommonly busy friend, at that. She has a boyfriend, apparently, but it isn't clear if the boyfriend is the father of the children (and if you're the boyfriend and are just now finding this out, my deepest apologies).
This afternoon I spoke with Las Vegas in-vitro fertilization specialist Dr. Said Daneshmand, a partner in The Fertility Center of Las Vegas, which this year is celebrating its 20th anniversary properly serving eager would-be parents in Southern Nevada. The good doctor and I talked about the weather, our favorite movies (we’re both fans of “This is Spinal Tap”), and while I had him on the line I asked, “What about that crazy baby-maker in L.A.? Is that just nutty? Is this even ethical?”
Dr. Daneshmand said there isn’t a universal embryo-transfer standard issued in any particular state – be it Nevada, California or Abject Lunacy – but that guidelines set by the American Society for Reproductive Medicine state that no more than two embryos should be transferred to a woman younger than age 35. The possibility of developmental disorders is far greater in multiple births than single births, he noted. The idea is to produce a single pregnancy, one at a time, no discount for buying bulk.
“To put six into a patient younger than 35 is not a responsible thing to do,” Dr. Daneshmand said.
Suleman is 33. But I expect she is aging by the moment.
Technorati

Kat, well written. I have a question that has been knawing at me; who paid for the "transfer"? Isn't this expensive?
I remember when I first walked into the Wynn Casino and saw the "carpeting", then I saw how much of it there was. It made me sick to my stomach to think that someone would actually order and pay for that much horrible flooring.
Same feeling of thoughtlessness about this woman.
This woman has a lot of nerve sitting there talking about how she's gonna support these kids when she finishes her education - the interviewer should have asked point blank who was gonna support them in the meantime - the grandmother? the taxpayers? I think CPS needs to do a thorough investigation and once they determine no one in the household can support that many children effectively they should step in and remove all the kids and place them in foster care. This woman, I'm sure, could care less now about her 'education' - now it's all about sitting back and waiting for the freebies to roll in ala Jon/Kate+8 - all losers who now plan on living off their kids.
"...once they determine no one in the household can support that many children effectively they should step in and remove all the kids and place them in foster care."
Yup. I agree. Amazingly. But I totally agree.
Something is askew, ya? Ya! Momma's not quite right.
From what I've seen of the t.v. interviews, this woman just doesn't have a grip on reality. She cannot tell fact from fiction. Now she's sucked the whole world into hers.
The funnier thing I heard was that she's an only child, and that as an only child she wasn't loved enough. She said by having 14 kids she's going to remedy that for her children.
She really is a piece of work. She also claims she doesn't want welfare, but she's already on food stamps.
She is a poster girl for cognitive dissonance.
This woman claims she is not taking welfare. She claims she is getting money from government programs out there to help people like her but in her mind that is not welfare. She is getting $490 a month in food stamps, she collected disability for many years for a hurt back but yet got pregnant many times during this time. 3 of the six kids she already has have a disability (one is autistic) and these 3 kids get SSI. Kaiser is asking medical (taxpayers) to pay for her hospital bill which could cost up to 3 million dollars. The experts say more than likely some of the eight babies if not all will have issues. She got her lips injected and botox before her tv interview. She says she paid about $100,000 for the IVF treatments. She now says she will use school loans to pay for her kids but once she finishes school and gets her counseling degree she will be able to pay for all 14 kids, of course I would not seek counseling from her. This woman has scammed the taxpayers for many years and the stupid government of California has just let this happened. Unfortunately she is just one of many woman who scam the welfare system. Her mom and dad have been supporting her and her 6 kids and they live in a dumpy 3 bedroom home that is a pigsty.
The big kicker is that she wants book deals, interviews, a reality show, or anything that the public will throw at her. I say boycott all of it, and don't support companies that will support her. If all it takes to make a million dollars is to get recklessly pregnant, endanger her life and her unborns' lives, and try to get other people to clean up her mess, no thanks.
Hey redferret,
I say let this woman make money off the kids. That way the tax payers of califronia won't have to foot the bill. She is going to need that money to raise those kids, and don't forget about college for them. If celebs can sell pics of their kids for millions, why shouldnt she. No one is going to take those kids away from her so think about the kids now that they are here. Dont be so self rightous.
I'm not self righteous. I just feel that the woman is off of her rocker, and that we shouldn't support the nut job. Ethically only 2 embryos should have been implanted, but she wanted 3X as many. Plain and simple she just wants to cash in. See how quickly she tried to compare herself to Jon/Kate +8. She already wants books (about what?), TV shows, and the like. She's already said she wants to host a TV show about being a mom. Give me a break.
There are rumors going around that the fertility Dr. is the father of the kids. If this is true, this is a new low.
How unusual. It seems a consensus here, as far as I can tell.
For me, it's like this. I really hate to hear right wingers say "liberals give free money and benefits to those who don't deserve it". But I hate it even more when somebody comes along and makes them right!
I think one reason that people are so offended is that she voluntarily chose to have at least 6 more kids on top of the 6 other kids she already has. Combined with being unemployed, one has to ask, why should we give her any money for voluntarily placing herself in such a stupid position. At least Jon and Kate had jobs to attempt to support their brood.
No one's mentioned this but I was wondering: If she had six embryos implanted, but produced eight children, does that mean that two of those embryos had to split and therefore there are two sets of identical twins in that group of eight?
Yep, that's exactly what happened. She went in doing something stupid, and got in even deeper.
Why haven't they closed down her uterus. Like the article implies she is a one person census changer. She will probably have her own congressional district if this keeps up.
"Why haven't they closed down her uterus."
Pesky laws against forced sterilization. But I don't think we should change them just because of one complete idiot.
Thank God this is an exception.
This woman is a human baby-making machine and I really think someone should do a mental evaluation on her and see if she really is fit to be a mother at all. She seems shady and self-absorbed to me and I feel so sorry for all of those children. The Grandmother is complaining that they can't take care of the kids she left at home while the other babies are in the hospital. 14 children on the welfare system for 18 years is crazy! Here we are all sweating losing our jobs and she is out stealing money from us to pay for her insanity! Book deals..reality shows? Oh please, nobody wants advice from a crazy ass like her! I really believe we should BOYCOTT any and all products that she endorses. Let her stew in the mess she went out and created!
I would love to have 8 children! Unfortunately, my husband and I only have the means to support the 2 that we have.
So she says that she wasn't loved by her parents as a child, but it was her parents who bought her a home for her 1st 6 kids, and it's them who are helping support her and her kids? This woman needs some serious mental help.
