First the news: there is a Las Vegas Film Critics Society.
It currently has a membership of 13 writers, including Las Vegas Weekly's Josh Bell and Matthew Scott Hunter. According to the group's website, it has been around for 11 years, and is a "non-profit, progressive organization dedicated to the advancement and preservation of film and is composed of selected print, television and internet film critics in the Las Vegas area. The LVFCS presents its 'Sierra' awards each year for the best in film, including The William Holden Lifetime Achievement Award, which is named for the brilliant Academy Award winning actor."
Anyway, the Society has picked its list of 2008 winners from the year's movies. Here's the top of the crop:
Best Picture: "Frost/Nixon"
Best Foreign Film: "Mongol"
Best Documentary: "Man on Wire"
Best Animated Film: "Wall-E"
Best Director: Ron Howard, "Frost/Nixon"
Best Actor: Frank Langella, "Frost/Nixon"
Best Actress: Kate Winslet, "Revolutionary Road" and "The Reader"
Best Supporting Actor: Heath Ledger, "The Dark Knight"
Best Supporting Actress: Marisa Tomei, "The Wrestler"
Marisa Tomei, huh? Let's hope that "Frost/Nixon" plays in Las Vegas cinemas, so the rest of us can see it!
