Church offers series on relationships

With Valentine’s Day approaching, many people are thinking about love. However, the fact is, at any given time, just as many lovebirds out there are also struggling with their relationships or are in the middle of a divorce. Statistics now show that more than half of all marriages end in divorce.

When I picked up my mail earlier in the week, a postcard stood out at me. You may have received one too, for a series entitled “The Knot.” I wanted to know a little more about it so I contacted Central Christian Church, which is sponsoring the event.

Jud Wilhite, senior pastor, is teaching the series. Attendees can expect to learn about attitudes in relationships, dating and marriage, relationship principles for marriage, and how to cope with divorce and remarriage.

“Relationships can be complicated. We go from saying ‘he’s just a friend,’ to ‘he’s a friend with potential;’ from ‘we’re just seeing each other,’ to ‘I think she’s the one,’ to tying the knot. But a lot gets tied in that knot -- family backgrounds, past relational hurts, ways we deal with money, damaging attitudes and expectations,” Wilhite said.

The series will begin this weekend, starting on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. The Henderson campus of the Central Christian Church is located just off of Interstate 95 and Russell Road. The series of classes will be held Feb. 7 and 8, Feb. 14 and 15, Feb. 21 and 22, and Feb. 28 and March 1.

Central is correct that relationships are important to all of us. The postcard says that “statistics show that 90 percent of people will marry at some point in their life.” At some point or another, almost every person is involved in some sort of relationship. Having the tools to strengthen a solid relationship or get through a tough spot can make a world of difference, which is the goal of the series.

“Sometimes the knot unties and we wonder, ‘What now?’ In this series, The Knot, we’ll look at tying the knot, when the knot unties, and everything in between,” Wilhite said.

“I’m so excited because I think the principles we’ll explore can make a huge positive impact on our single and married relationships.”
