The nation’s best high school football team had the nation’s best coach.

USA Today named Bishop Gorman’s Tony Sanchez today as its coach of the year for the past season. Sanchez led Gorman to a 15-0 record and sixth straight Nevada state championship. Earlier this week, they finished ranked No. 1 in a pair of final rankings for the mythical national title.

Sanchez was picked two weeks ago as the next UNLV coach, making the rare jump from high school to college.

It’s a tall task, but Sanchez — as proven again today — has unquestioned credentials. He went 85-5 in six seasons at Gorman, with this week’s honors of the mythical national title and coach of the year honors, icing on the cake.
