Last week 3-2 Season 163-33
Gorman 49 Reed 7"at the half final 63-21
Really looking forward to the small town feel the clean air, trees, creeks, courteous drivers, beautiful surrounding areas and overall pleasantness of northern Nevada. Not looking forward to the whining. This is the softest Northern representative sent to state since Wooster in 2001 (which coincidentally upset Gorman in the semis before going on to lose to McQueen for the third time that season in the final). Last year's Reed (which was probably the 7th best team in the state) would put a whooping on this year's Reed. Lake Mead could rise a couple feet with the crying northern NV parents are about to do. Save it, your team isn't that good this year, nor was it last. The north has had great teams in the past and they will again someday (hopefully soon) but as their very seldom and unsuccessful out of state games have shown- as of late- even your very best isn't as good as you think. Reed's playoffs opponents have combined record of 16-13 and only one of the three would even be in the conversation for a top 20 in state ranking. Reed will bring a lot of false hope heading into this mismatch. Anything can happen just ask Shabazz and Co. about Bishop Manogue. Sanchez will do his best to keep the score from hitting triple digits, but Reed should learn from last year and pull their starters when Sanchez is kind enough to take his foot off their throats and pull ours.
Coronado 24 Liberty 22
Liberty's play has been suspect as of late (maybe they've been saving it for Gorman) and Coronado certainly has momentum following their big win over rival Green Valley. Coronado has the coach of the year with Talich and his staff and could build on what has been an excellent year for Coronado's athletics teams. There's nothing I'd love to see more than Liberty vs. Gorman in two weeks and likely the Patriots will play with a lot more motivation this week because they know they can bring it right at Gorman and have had Dec 1st on their mind since last year. My gut tells me Coronado ruins that party and pulls off an epic upset. Coronado hasn't lost since their early October date at Liberty and just seems poised to finish this run with an exclamation point at Liberty. Meanwhile Liberty struggled to use home field as an advantage against Basic, Coronado and Canyon (2x) and squeaked out victories. I'm glad it's going to be on TV it should be a great game.
Everyone counted Coronado out last year in Baseball and Softball. They shocked everyone by going to the finals. The school has pride and passion. They might not have the Haka and Liberty could beat them 9 out of 10 times but I hear the upset alert tone. Coronado will win by some special teams magic or by stealing the momentum late.
Coronado by 2
Gorman will win the head game as soon as they get off the plane. Reed just stopped crying from last years beating. Reed needs to fight and give it all they got for the first half. They will be down by 45 points. Then just let the seniors and backups play and enjoy the stage. Last year Reed kept them in when Sanchez let off the gas. What did that get them? 2 more TD"s from Shaq and the Gorman starters. They learned the hard way Sanchez and The Gaels will beat you or give you a beat down.
Gorman by 58
Also *14 of the 21 i'm saying Gorman gives up against Reed will be against 2nd and 3rd stringers and only because Sanchez knows the North is tone deaf to the south and love the North so the smallest margin of victory the better for catching slack. Nobody wants to hear the crying if they shut Reed out as much as they could do that, they wont.
TeamSG1
Sanchez does it better. If you swap the coaching staffs from reed and gorman and play out the season. You will have a lot closer Gorman vs Reed game this weekend.
You sound like one of these people who "deserve" a great life without all the effort it takes to succeed.
It will be crying- with an excuse. They have this false confidence that Reed is actually good this year, they're not. Their gripe has its basis but this year unfortunately it will be fueled by the false impression that Reed would have actually had a chance to win were it not for Gorman. Which they wouldn't but they wont admit that it's easier to blame Gorman.
Gorman will have continued success, but not anywhere near the level they've had the last few years. It cycles. There's no way they do what they've done with Cunningham Jr at the helm. They'll do well, they'll compete but they wont be untouchable locally. In a few years when there's no more Fertitta's on the roster it is natural to think that while that family has always been and will always be a supporter of Gorman that their interest in the program may scale back a little bit. Sanchez' success will eventually land him elsewhere likely in the college ranks. Gorman wont win state the next four years in a row, they'll be good and someday maybe even great again but so will other schools. The north will win state again and even Truckee will eventually lose. Cycles.
If there were enough privates in NV there should definitely be a private league. There's not.
I've said it before and i'll say it again if Gorman was booted from the NIAA for proven, continued violations that's fair and well deserved. If they're booted because they are winning that's the worst lesson in real life any kid could learn it's cowardly.
You may as well take kids like me that grew up poor in crappy neighborhood and give us our own division for poor neighborhoods to automatically make it to playoffs based on what we didn't have. Private, public, poor or affluent you still have to play the game , lift the weights, earn the grades and go out there and do the damn thing.
Take away Gorman and then the focus will turn to publics that have advantages. Centennial girls bball, Rancho baseball, Palo football, any school in a better neighborhood than Rancho or Valley lol Going national would be crappy for varsity quiz, soccer and every other sport that hasn't had the run football has.
And like I said in my other post which i'm not sure you caught, SG if you have a gripe against Gorman for getting slighted I can understand that you're upset but being negative on every story will only make you more angry and bitter. If you have information on violations and just refuse to report them to the NIAA then you're just as guilty for not speaking up or you're guilty of stirring the pot. While this post was a valid question and point (which you do make from time to time) hating on Gorman on every single story wont make you any happier. Like I said in our private message, if you have information of violations, please go report it to the NIAA. If you don't then i'd suggest finding another outlet for your displeasure for Gorman, not because you don't have a right to express it, but it's just unhealthy for you to let it burn you up inside and keep feeding that anger everyday for the rest of your life. You may hate Gorman forever, just like I will my ex every month I have to write a check but constantly reminding myself how I hate it makes for some negative outlook and takes away focus from other things so i choose to ignore it as often and as best I can because it's not changing.
Final Four! Lets go
Coronado over Liberty
Coronado is playing great right now. Liberty hasn't been the team we expected. This is an unfair judgement because all they have done is win. The issue is we are judging them on the Gorman factor.
Can they compete with Gorman.
Gorman over Reed
Gorman by 40. I say this every week. Gorman by 40 against any in State team.Sorry Reed but we take Gorman all year , you only get one game, be thankful.
Tuasdad and Team SG1 the Gorman question arises again. Gorman is in a unique place.
Lets talk about whats even.
Yes we can lift weights harder, run harder, and the coaching can get better. There is no advantage to Gorman in those areas that public schools can't do. Remember, Rocky beat the Russian low tech workouts over the machines and technology. Gorman's advantage comes in being able to get the top talent to go to Gorman. They can recruit. You cant tell a private school it can't go after students. Let me be clear on something, all the top schools recruit. Period. They do it on the down low. Ill say it again, USC and UNLV are recruiting you for football , are you going to UNLV. Now we also have to blame some of these gutless parents. They will only allow their kid to play for the best team. Its starts in little league. You have a good kid, but you dont win the championship, next year that kid wont play for you, he signs up with that team that won the championship. I'm not saying that every parent who sends their kid to Gorman is that parent, but we all know people who have done this. People dont have the guts to say we are going to go here instead and beat Gorman. Gorman also has the eye candy, there is nothing the public schools can do about that. I I was rich and decided I wanted to build a public school a stadium, the school district would turn it down, I checked and that is what I was told. Gorman has great facilities, for some people its a easy decision. I will say this, the academics at Gorman are great also.
Gorman will continue to dominate, they are a top 5A team playing in an OK 4A State. We dont have a 5A.
Is it fair, yes and no. Its not fair to the people who have good intentions and work hard for Gorman to be Gorman. Its not fair because they will always
get the top players because of the money. Public schools cant compete with the money side.
When a public school gets a principle and AD that wants to compete with Gorman, then maybe it will happen. Gorman also understands what having good sports teams do for their enrollment. It not only keeps enrollment up but the quality pool of enrollment goes up as well. More A students than B Students.
Look at institutions will great athletics, Ahletics brings money, money means better books , new buildings, better pay for teachers witch means better teachers, more kids wanting to go to the school because of the new building(eye candy) good teams , and the parents like the better teachers and sports teams. A win win situation. This is Gorman. This is UCLA, USC, Florida, Texas, Alabama and the list go on. The next time you are in LA go take a look at USC and see all that BCS money going to work, enrollement is at all time highs.
Part 2 The Gorman Question
Public schools can close the gap. We dont take sports serious enough to beat Gorman. Gorman kids work their butts off in class and on the field. They understand that no grades no college football.
The formula for beating Gorman(maybe keeping the score close)
Stronger stronger stronger. Write this down. Weight lifting has to be a priority , not an extra thing to do. Strong teams are good teams. Look at the playoff teams in both Div 1 and 1A. The final four of each division is probably top four strongest teams, if not they are close.
A Complete speed and quickness training. Field work. You can get faster and quicker with the proper training combined with the proper weight lifting. I'm not saying you can go from running a 5.2 40 to a 4.3 40 but a .2 to .4 increase can be attainable. Run track also.
Grades, grades, grades. Kids with good grade show the ability to be dedicated and disciplined. A good coach can work wonders with a dedicated and disciplined team. This also means the kids stay on the field because they are not ineligible. How many schools have had problems with kids being ineligible. Solution. Have a study hall to monitor grades all year long. Make it mandatory that they do grade checks at least once a week, this way you can stay on top of what the kids are or are not doing in the classroom, (also deal out punishments for the kids who are misbehaving in class. Updowns are or running lines are great for discipline.
Coaches go get some knowledge. Most don't know as much as they think and won't go get training. Every off season coaches should go to at least 2 coaches clinics before the summer. Not just any clinic but ones that pertain to what you do. A line backer coach should go to a linebacker clinic or defense clinics. Also go to here a head college coach talk.
Make one of your coaches or go get a strength coach and send him to a college strength and conditioning clinic. Then most important, teach what you learned. Stop being bull headed thinking that you are the only one who knows football, get a clue.
Follow these steps and you will find success.
CoachEarl,
I cannot agree with you more. Its sad when an all-star football team comes together under Coach Sanchez and he has to introduce them to some basic skills. Plus, having these kids involved in a scripted 2 hour practice for the first time ever is just sad.
Grades? The school system in the county does not care about making these kids college ready. When the graduation rate is about 60% in the valley how can the focus be on college. At Gorman the conversation is which college you are going to not if you are going to college. It shows with a 98% college rate.
The weightroom, grades, and off season work comes down to commitment and discipline. A lot of these public schools kids do not have it. If you think your kid does, shadow a Gorman athlete for a week. The school work load is twice as demanding, your workouts are longer and consume your weekends. SAT and ACT tests are talked about daily. I know some great athletes in the public school system but they are great and ready for college because of the parents. You see them in club sports and at the practice fields at school. If you want your school's athletic programs to excell, you need more parents like these blessed few.
I'll look out for it SG.
The roids thing I have zero tolerance for. I have no doubt it probably happens with at least one athlete in every single school. The difference is if it's just a kid on his own making the wrong choice or if the coaches are aware or encourage it. That's not just wrong it's criminal. I won't say which school but there was one here in Henderson, this season (their season is over) who from a reliable source had an ast coach called out by a parent for his not so subtle hints about roids.
The off-season "encouraged" stuff like track, well that's what separates the "teams" from the "programs". I know for baseball, basketball and soccer it is tough to financially support a year round schedule for club and travel but that's what makes the difference in the fall...it's how much work and what you did in the spring and summer. Every successful program in the country does that. Every successful student athlete does that.
I think the Gorman advantage of providing a better education and better facilities isn't something they should be booted for. Centennial has better education and facilities than Basic..Palo better than Rancho. There's always somebody with an upper hand there. Personal experience I can say, not speculate that early 2000's Vegas and current day Palo admin actually approaching youth football players. Nowadays with the history and campus Gorman provides I don't think they need to go look for the talent, the talent will be led there. Every neighbor, uncle and friend of a stud football player in this town is already telling them where they should get their kid into high school to maximize their opportunity to play college ball. The grades, the off season stuff, every successful program does that or you get passed up. The infractions worth severe punishment, suspension or dismissal would be outright recruiting, using your coach's address to get variance (LaRoque at Durango early 2000's), encouraging or providing roids etc... What I dislike the most is the pot calling the kettle black and everyone seemingly thinking that erasing Gorman makes any advantages go away when there's public schools recruiting and pushing kids through loopholes a lot more than any private.
And coachearl was as right as you can get.
The roids comment is absurd and tired just like the race card. Fact is best players, best facility, and best coach. I despise Gorman but its a fact they are the best. Liberty is no where as good up ffront as last yer and that's where bg dominate the local competition and will continue to do so. The real question is what has happened to the north they were so good when I was a kid now they are a joke. McQueen is sad especially such a storied program.
GURU, i have no doubt that the north will come back sooner than later. Like Vegas they were still building schools assuming the population would keep growing and you had situations similar to Eldorado where Sunrise Mtn was built right down teh street and sucked up good amount of their enrollment. Some schools like Wooster dropped significantly in enrollment which played a small part in dividing the population.
Biggest thing to happen was McQueen's coach Ken Dalton retiring in 2009. He'd been there since the school opened and McQueen was the Gorman/Palo of the north. Kids grew up in Reno wanting to be Lancers not play for Hug or Spanish Springs. After he retired Reed made a serious push for best in the north, they have a capable coach and it has worked for success in the north but they are nothing like the McQueens of early 2000's and late 90's.
I still say bottom line is Gorman can recruit and the public schools cannot. Gorman gives scholarships public can not. It's said they play local because there aren't enough private schools in Nevada? How does Finley Prep find opponents and never play local? Sure HS coaches can do a better job off the field training but when the best players are taken away from local schools it really doesn't matter. I'm with TeamSG1 on his points. It's not about Gorman winning it's about the unfair advantage. I'm happy to see Findley prep win.
Paul-
"I still say bottom line is Gorman can recruit and the public schools cannot"
That may be your opinion but that is ignoring the truth. Desiribility is not a requisite of truth, you may not like or choose to believe it but yes public schools recruit.
B- FindlAy prep isn't even a school, they don't have 1,000 students who dont play basketball. They have an great prep program and have accomplished a lot but they are a prep factory not a school. The 10-12 national and international students live in a house with teh coach, they are all from out of state or country, their families don't live here. They attend Henderson Internation which doesn't have grades 9-12 except for the players on the basketball team. There are several prep academies in the country and kudos to them for what they do for their players but comparing them to even Gorman or St Thomas Aquinas or De la Salle or any other private is oranges and apples.
Coach Sanchez said it himself in the other newspaper. Gorman has the best players. I do not know him or any members of his staff, but from the honesty he displays in the press, the Gorman staff would probably be the first to tell you that if they were at ANY OTHER SCHOOL IN NEVADA, they too would lose to Gorman.
Gorman shouldn't be punished just for being Gorman. But to believe that they are on a level playing field with their competition here is naive.
Every state championship BG wins is just another step towards losing full membership status with the NIAA. Boys soccer just won sstate, football is about to get its 4th in a row, basketball has 3 out of the last 4, and baseball has 7 in a row (so much for than talk about cycles). I personally hope they win every championship and eliminate themselves from the NIAA. It's only a matter of time. With that being said, they are a great school and have amazing programs, go play better quality opponents so you don't put up 70 in football, 25 in baseball, and win by 50 in basketball. BGs athletes would benefit from better competition.
Fan.. you hit it on the head "Gorman shouldn't be punished just for being Gorman. But to believe that they are on a level playing field with their competition here is naive"
Gorman certainly has advantages but every school has advantages. If we want all schools to have the same of everything, limit fans allowed to attend to only the number the lowest attending school will have, limit parent volunteers to only the amount the school with the least volunteers will have. If Gorman kids who happen to play sports can't receive financial aid, then how bout any public school kid who gets a zone variance to take "japanese, aeronotics" etc.. can't play a sport either. Divide all football players evenly among the 35 schools regardless of zone that way no school has more than another. Subsidize championships. Every school gets a certificate of participation at end of season, no champs.
Affluent neighborhood schools have advantages over those in lowest income. Cheyenne had a 1,400 student enrollment advantage over Truckee that did it no good. It's not fair to Truckee/Moapa/BC etc.. to play against schools with 3-4-5 times their enrollment because those schools weren't any good at sports but such is life right?
TwoCent I agree that the more titles they win the more it angers folks but what should they do? Gorman soccer team as the underdogs beat nationally ranked Green Valley soccer for the title. The advantages and cycles go to everyone.Centennial Girls bball averaged winning margins of 50+ points over local opponents over a 7 year period and won more titles than Gorman...they're the reason we have a running clock rule in basketball. Advantages don't stop at Gorman or anywhere in life.
MyTwoCent, the problem is people act like Gorman A: is the only one with advantage B: there isn't a soul on public side that does any wrong
C: That eliminating Gorman makes everything wonderful and perfectly even.
As for cycles, lets see Just football this year Truckee 4 titles in a row and 7 since 2001, From 00-08 McQueen or Vegas won 6 of those football titles, Pahranganat Valley 5 straight titles, Cent Girls Bball has won 4 of last 8 titles (more than Gorman btw which they also whoop routinely), 10 of last 12 state wrestling titles went to same two schools.
The NIAA does a tally for schools overall performance in ALL sports, not just the big three of football, basketball & baseball. This is 1/3 of their calculations for their Award of Excellence annual award. Basically it takes athletic achivements, sportsmanship and grades to pick a winner with schools getting points for league championships, state etc.. and gpa's of course.
Here is the SPORT only calculations for last year...and the overall winner btw was Bishop Manogue for the second time in three years.
"Centennial was the top point getter with 1320 points. Coronado (1210 points), Bishop Gorman (1150) and Green Valley (1070) were the second, third and fourth best overall athletic programs for 2011-12, respectively. The other top overall schools had the following athletic-only totals: Reno, 950; Palo Verde, 910; Galena, 780; Bishop Manogue, 720; and Reed, 700"
I'm curious to see how much higher Coronado's is this year as they've continue their success in various programs.
Coach Earl- Most of the things you said are right but its one thing you forgot. You have to have athletes to when and unless these coaches start going to get them there never going to beat Gorman. Gorman will take a big hit in talent after this senior class. They're not going to be that great on offense so if you can tackle you will be able to beat them next year. They don't have the best young talent and there not going to be able to get it so these public schools better take advantage. As far as Rost, he has toned his recruiting back the last couple of years thats why the gap is so big. Your right alot of couaches around here do need to be more open because Sanchez is a California coach and they do things much different there.
"if we cant beat them, we can sure as hell ruin their careers. Lets tear some f*ing acls and paralyze these motherf***" tweet from Reed player last night. There were some other nice ones about gorman players getting cancer and solomon being decapitated.
Should be good times today. Its a little chilly, i had to put shoes on. no flip flops today
tuasdad,
Chilly?
71 degrees during the game today...
Beautiful football weather...
Couldn't believe Reed Coaches let the clock run out before half time...
4th and 1 near mid field, with 20 seconds on the clock...
They set up, and just stood there, in formation...
Why not take a shot down field with 5 seconds on the clock? Perhaps the pass play over the middle they scored on to tie it at 14...
Then, Reed drives the length of the field to open the 3rd Q, to come up with an INT, inside the 10...
Hold BG to 3 and punt, from their end zone... Reed has it 1st and 10 on BG 37, and only comes away with an FG... 21 - 17....
It pretty much went down hill for Reed from that point on....
OLTG i posted that at 8am when there was frost on my windows. The day turned out gorgeous and i had no use for the sweatshirt i brought to the game. I've got a mouthful to say about the game (shocker i know) that neither those pro, nor those anti Gorman will like and likely neither may agree with me but i call it how i see it. Itll have to wait till i get home thaough
Proud of my Patriots! Liberty took the heart from this Coronado team today. Time to get ready for the Gaels! Go Patriots!!
