Brewer's Picks
Last Season
154-31 (.832)

Las Vegas Sun reporters Ray Brewer and
Case Keefer attempt to pick
the winning team from prep contests
across the Las Vegas area.

Keefer's Picks
Last Season
150-35 (.810)

Chey-town is my favorite to win the Division 1-A crown.
Cheyenne 32, Desert Pines 20

Behind the considerable wheels of Myloe Lewis and Devin Tatum, the Desert Shields have a shot at a memorable season.
Cheyenne 24, Desert Pines 16

Clark learns how tough it is traveling out of Vegas.
Virgin Valley 23, Clark 6

The Bulldogs have twice as many starters returning as the Chargers.
Virgin Valley 34, Clark 20

Faith Lutheran shows it is improved, but still comes up short.
Lutheran 29, Faith Lutheran 26

Faith Lutheran
at
Lutheran (Colo.)

Lions only lost one game last season.
Lutheran 30, Faith Lutheran 14

Mojave has too much speed for BC to contain.
Mojave 19, Boulder City 15

Can’t pick against an improved Rattlers team that won in Boulder City last year, though this is the most competitive matchup of the first week.
Mojave 28, Boulder City 24

Sunrise Mountain wins its first game. EVER.
Sunrise Mountain 25, Western 16

This could go either way, so I’ll oppose Brewer to make it interesting.
Western 15, Sunrise Mountain 14

Won’t pick against my Cowboys in this one.
Chaparral 31, Sierra Vista 26

Mountain Lions could be sleepers in the new Sunset Northwest.
Sierra Vista 30, Chaparral 17

Utah school is too much for Shadow Ridge.
Snow Canyon 35, Shadow Ridge 7

Seems like Snow Canyon beats up on a Nevada team once or twice every season.
Snow Canyon 42, Shadow Ridge 13

Conner Mortensen is one of the best players in Division 1-A.
Moapa Valley 38, Pahrump Valley 6

Trojans will find it difficult to move the ball against the Pirates, a team eager to even its record.
Moapa Valley 30, Pahrump Valley 6

Tough to travel across the country for high school players.
Gorman 34, Our Lady 19

After looking over the roster, I’m changing my pick from what I said on the podcast. Falcons are too much.
Our Lady 24, Gorman 21

  1. Ray- Cheyenne should be in Div I so definitely agree they're team to beat (+DP,MV) from the south in IA but unfortunately they will have to beat Truckee (likely) up north to get that crown. The state semi game will be a bigger challenge than the state final and I hope they know that. Many a favorite from the south has traveled north to be humbled by less athletic, less star prospect filled, teams with weather on their side.

Ray- I will run do cartwheel down my street if Gorman puts 34 points on Good Counsel, that is highly unlikely. Highly. If they do that we'd make the top ten on every list by Monday. I hope you're right and i'm wrong but that's a lot of points to put on the one of the best defenses in the entire country. If we won, given our solid defense it'll be an Armwood type score in the high teens low 20's. I'll be pulling hard for my Gaels but too many two way stars against a team that has all but 6 starters with D1 offers and don't need any to play both ways is a hard beast to tackle specially in the later stages of the game when two way stars have to feel fatigued. Would love to be wrong, if anyone can do it, it's my Gaels.

    Cheyenne 35 DP 27
    Virgin V 21 Clark 12
    Lutheran 44 Faith L 21
    Mojave 28 Mojave 24
(how's Mojave's depth? BC looked pretty good at Basic scrimmage but they had very small numbers)

    Sunrise 35 Western 28
(Western got scored on at will by Boulder and Basic, Sunrise has to win eventually)

    Sierra Vista 28 Chaparral 27
Snow Canyon 45 Shadow Ridge 14
    Moapa 31 Pahrump Valley 10
    Good Counsel 27 Gorman 14

  2. FYI, Truckee's Coach Shaffer does Not have heaters on the sidelines, EVER.
(With 162 Wins, Coach Shaffer has more wins than ANY other Active Coach in the NIAA, and in Week 5, should pass Virgin Valley's Kirk Hafen, (166) for Third All Time.)
Last year, Parents, Alumni and Students removed 8 INCHES of Snow off the field for the quarter final game against Fernley...
These kids are still going to school in shorts in November....no lie...
Until someone proves otherwise, the Div. I-A State Championship still has to go through Moapa Valley and Truckee....

  3. Well Keefer it looks like you didnt do your home work, Sierra Vista wont win more than 1 game this year, there sophomore QB move to georgia and there sensational sophomore RB Justin Green moved to Indiana.

  4. Tuasdad, does 27 pts mean you'll be doing cartwheels half way down your street?
