November 11

Brewer's Picks
Last Week:
7-2

Season:
143-30 (.826)

Brewer vs. Keefer

Las Vegas Sun reporters Ray Brewer and
Case Keefer attempt to pick
the winning team from prep contests
across the Las Vegas area.

Keefer's Picks
Last Week:
9-0

Season:
139-34 (.803)

Not much has changed in the three weeks since the schools’ first meeting.
Bishop Gorman 53, Arbor View 7

Thought Arbor View would challenge Gorman a little more the first time around. No reason to see it happening this time.
Bishop Gorman 60, Arbor View 16

This one will be a lot closer than you think.
Palo Verde 28, Centennial 14

Closer than the first game maybe, but I don’t foresee this ending well for the Bulldogs.
Palo Verde 38, Centennial 10

My tune will never change on this matchup — speed kills.
Las Vegas 20, Liberty 19

Brewer’s “tune” continues to be off rhythm.
Liberty 34, Las Vegas 14

Using my theory of taking the best player on the field, Foothill and Kyle Keplinger prevail.
Foothill 32, Basic 26

Could sacrifice my integrity and pick Basic in a desperate attempt to catch Brewer’s record, but everything tells me Foothill will win.
Foothill 28, Basic 27

Commute from Winnemucca is too much for Lowry to overcome.
Moapa Valley 13, Lowry 7

Lowry
at
Moapa Valley

Last week’s scare was an experience the Pirates needed to go through.
Moapa Valley 21, Lowry 7

  1. brewer is in denial. lol... the wildcat team last year had much more division 1 talent with a lot more speed than this year's team. they only way they scored was when liberty put in the 2nd team players. speed kills? maybe so. but power killed speed last year and it will do it again this year! another week of great high school football!!

  2. Ray/Case-
Thanks for all the coverage you guys have given Moapa Valley this year. I think if you guys can move this to the front page of the sports tab under "From The Sports Blogs" you will get a lot more traffic and comments.

  3. Foothill vS Gorman in state Gorman wins by 50. any takers

  4. .Well looks like we're headed for the annual Big Game of each year between BG vs. Palo.

Also, will we get another shootout in what I believe will be a rematch between Liberty vs. Foothill.

That's just my opinion. That being said AV great year, lot of talent, very good coaches, Great FAN support. Just tough draw. Finally got to see Jacobi Owens do what we thought he could do since watching him in jr high. Basic's Boyd and Spencer are really special. Best wr tandem i've seen. Boyd still has one more year. And finally, its been fun watching Henderson and Victor. Going to miss their talents but wish them well.

    Anyway, just one persons opinion.

  5. Reporter1125, that would have to be state semi-finals. This year the winner of the south goes to Reno to play the North's champion for state title.

  6. Palo will be very ready for Gorman I can't wait for that game. Defensively Palo is great and underestimated. Any other year I'd be worried but if Gorman can put 17 on Armwood's defense which is widely being discussed as the best in the country, I think.they'll put 40 on Palo. Not taking anything away from Palo they're phenomenal defensively and just may be better than even Servite's. Not as deep but as good.

Liberty will plow an over ranked Vegas I hope they make.it ugly. Liberty will ragdoll Vegas.

I gotta mention again how pathetic the fan support for canyon was. I feel for Hunky pouring his heart into that program and he gets jack and crap of support in the stands. That was sad.

Boyd is legitimate. Seen him twice this year he's legit. I.hope his grades and sat scores are good enough to play D1 and not JC.

  7. Yeah Gorman played well in Armwood game, but remember it was Armwood's first game with new Qb, plus all-american rb Jones didn't play which is like Gorman playing without Shaq and Stanley. Oh, and Armwood got delayed in Nashville for 4 hrs. Got into their rooms at 1:00 am. 4:00 am their time zone.

BG represented Nevada well, but let's keep some proper perspective regarding the Armwood game. That being said, I just don't see the playmakers on this Palo team as in the past. Love their defense and better coaching staff. I believe AV has better playmakers and we saw what BG did to those guys.

Prediction: BG 38 AV 14 if AV wins coin toss. If BG wins coin toss it could be ugly again.

Prediction II: BG 24 Palo 7

Prediction III: BG 42 Liberty 21. Liberty has better offense not so on defense.

Prediction IV: BG 31 Reed 14. BGHS STATE CHAMPS again.

My thoughts. Like to hear others.

  8. Palo is a "rule-abiding public school"? That's hilarious...

  9. Lvfootball....won't go into the whole armwood debate but my argument was Armwood's defensive unit being so freaking good, has nothing to do with Matt Jones or their qb.

  10. Gorman 40 Arbor View 14 (Gorman will pull starters end of third save from injuries will need everyone for Palo game otherwise it'd be worse or same as last. Plus I'm sure AV made adjustments)

Palo 38 Centennial 17 (Palo has an amazing defense and like Gorman will pull their starters once game is out of reach or it'd be worse)

    Liberty 40 Las Vegas 14

Foothill 45 Basic 42 another shootout this could go either way. I'm hoping basic wins

  11. My predictions for this week:
    Liberty 31 Las Vegas 17
    Gorman 35 Arbor View 14
    Centennial 21 Palo 17
    Basic 28 Foothill 14

  12. You are all drinking the Palo flavored kool-aid. Gorman is 50 points better than every team in Nevada. And I am not a homer. I absolutely hate Gorman. But I am a realist. I have seen them play in person and seen most of thier games on tape. It's rare that their starters are in past the middle of the 3rd Quarter. And many times the score is low due to the fact that the mercy rule is usually kicked in at halftime. While Palo is extremely well coached they don't match up well with Gorman in the trenches. And when you run the Double Wing offense the trenches are all that matter...

  13. That's a first. I've never accused of drinking the Palo kool aid. The rivalry factor counts for.something. If picking Gorman by 40 is drinking Palo kool aid then you're a homer. If Gorman wanted to it could have broken every state record this year if their starters played whole game. They could win sw league games by 100 and beat Arbor by 70. But they won't risk injuring starters. I think sanchez let's the Palo game get to a 50 point game (payback for 2008) then pulls starters and enjoys a trip to reno. I'll be.there to watch them beat reed.

  14. Footballguy is correct, in all honesty Palo is down by their standards. They have 0 big play threats on offense, unlike in the past where they always had 1 back that was special this year their backs are average. Their defense is good when it comes to the front 7. However, you will see them get exposed in the secondary. BG will beat them by 50, I wish Palo was playing Arbor. I believe Arbor would beat Palo if they didn't turn the ball over 4 times. I don't want to bash coaches, but Palo is not that well coached they have 1 State title in their schools history. For a long time they were the public Gorman, they have recruited down at Ed Fountain park since Rost created that league.

  15. First: Palo will lose by 40+
Second: things Palo has going for it: a very good defense, they're not nearly as limited as Arbor when it comes to passing in the wing T and they absolutely hate Gorman. Yes, they'll get buried if the go man on man and when they start going deep to try to play catch up they'll get picked.

Things that Palo doesn't have going for it: while they have a very good defense Gorman has seen better this year, twice. Gorman doesn't have to run and doesn't have to pass they, unlike many other team are just as good at each. Their defense is better than Palo's so a shootout is very unlikely. Even if Palo plays a hell of a game defensively their offense is not capable of putting up big points on Gorman. I wish it were Arbor View playing Palo first but I'm glad Gorman will literally beat the top 5 teams in the state in order to win it. Unlike Reed who pretty starts the playoffs against a 2-7 team and will have there starters rested for state title.game. Gorman will play the most physical teams in the state three weeks in a row before title game hopefully they make it out injury free and represent the south well again.

Gorman (or southern team most likely route to state final)
    Round #1 vs #15ish Cheyenne
Round #2 vs #3 Arbor View
Round #3 vs #2 Palo Verde
    Round #4 vs #5 Liberty
    Round#5 vs #4 Reed

    Reed route state final
Round #1 vs #30-35 Spanish Springs
    Round #2 vs #20-25 Reno
    Round #3 vs # 10-15 Carson
    Round #4 vs #1 Gorman

Fewer games, against guaranteed overall much weaker teams then a Go directly to title game pass. Northern Nevada sometimes has the best team in the state but the way they get candy playoffs every third year screws south teams

  16. my picks for tomorrow:
    Gorman
    Palo
    Liberty
    Foothill
    Moapa

Hoping for another rematch between Foothill and Liberty for a spot at State!!!

  17. Let me be the first to apologize to the Wildcats. They dont have a defensive game that can stop Liberty. It's going to be ugly! And it will be Return of the Brick Wall from last year! Nowhere to run...nowhere to pass! Check your lock cuz Liberty is going to pick it and break into the end zone...repeatedly!

  18. Ahhh, Foothill-Liberty rematch is going to be sweet! Great season Basic, you guys battled hard tonight.

    Congrats Foothill!!!
