The week of Nov. 20
Brewer's Picks
Last Week:
6-2
143-28 (.836)
Brewer vs. Silver
Las Vegas Sun reporters Ray Brewer and
Steve Silver attempt to pick
the winning team from prep contests
across the Las Vegas area.
Silver's Picks
Last Week:
5-3
136-35 (.795)
Gorman has never lost a game at its home Fertitta Field. Now, it can celebrate a regional title at the 3-year-old stadium.
Gorman 33, Cimarron 15
Brewer is such a hypocrite. He has been touting Cimarron as the state champion for weeks. I'm sticking with Gorman.
Gorman 35, Cimarron 24
Basic ends Foothill's Cinderella playoff run.
Basic 32, Foothill 23
I'm still shocked Foothill made it this far. Basic is too tough this week.
Basic 28, Foothill 17
Turnovers finally come back to haunt Liberty.
Del Sol 26, Liberty 20
I figured Las Vegas was the only obstacle between Del Sol and the state title game. It's the Dragons' region to lose.
Del Sol 31, Liberty 21
Southern Nevada schools always struggle when they travel up North. Moapa Valley will learn that the hard way in the 3A state title game.
Truckee 21, Moapa Valley 13
The last thing Moapa fans need is a state title to boost their egos. Since I want the Pirates to lose, I'm picking them. The Silver Curse lives on.
Moapa Valley 35, Truckee 28

Well I like to thank you to for picking against Liberty again. For some odd reason whenever you pick against Liberty they always find a way to win. And you make it seem that Liberty is always lucky winning games or Liberty didn't really earn the W. Yes it is Liberty's first playoff scene, but thats no reason for picking against them. Yes the fumbles were costly against Canyon Springs, but don't you think the coach made adjustments for that. And can you please give some credit to the Liberty Defense. So far only two teams scored over 20 points against them, they shut down 3 good running backs and held them under 100 yards rushing (Edwards, Afoa, and Rimmey). The D-line is lead by Remy Taeao, Teddy Efthemeou and Josh Lavau. And the defense lead by the Sunrise defensive MVP Samson Toalei. But with all that said go ahead and just say Liberty is just lucky or make excuses for all the teams Liberty beats. I'm Just Saying....
Dont forget Garick Wharton. As great as he is as a running QB, the Liberty Defense held him to minus 6 yards! Aah whatever... People say the Patriots don't belong where they are right now. Who cares! It's nothing new. Everyone expects us to be the team we have always been in the past. Oh well...keep bangin away at it boyz! Folks can choose to be ignorant to what you have accomplished against the odds, but we know the truth! Fight on!
Thanks for the support Ray and Steve!!! Go Moapa Valley!!!
Silver - You might actually be right on with the score this time. Too bad you had to ruin it with your comment.
Brewer - Just because your beloved Boulder City got hammered up north does not mean the Pirates will. And the last time Moapa played up North in the post-season was in 2007 at Spring Creek. Spartans were the #1 North and Pirates the #2 South. And Moapa won. Way to do your homework Ray.
Aren't you guys from Southern Nevada anyway? Thanks for the support.
Here's to the 3-Peat!
Go Pirates!
Liberty D has a field day led by Samson Toalei.
Brewer and Silver you are both wrong The Falcons lost a touchdown in the first game because of an officals blown call and would have changed the whole game imagine that! We knocked out the Number 1 team Las Vegas. Remember its not about Cinderellas its about hard nose football and the Falcons have proven themselves!! Any time anywhere and WE will end the Wolves run. GO Falcons!!!!
I certainly think it will be a great game, but it's hard for me to pick against a one loss Basic team.
Foothill definitely has the capability of making it to the state title game, but the Moapa and Silverado losses leave big question marks in my mind.
Well vegas vegas I would love to see a Gorman vs. Liberty title game as well, Liberty got something to prove to someone. But got to take care of Del Sol first. And thats this weeks agenda. Good Luck to the Patriots, its do or die.....hea we go...
Wow! I am appalled at the total disregard of professional journalism on Steve Silvers part! I am an avid follower of High School sports and have come to learn by Mr. Silvers comment "Since I want the Pirates to lose.." shows the true character of the individual. Silvers column is not really about reporting the sport but to stimulate controversy. I really doubt that he even talks to the various players around the area but merely sits in an office and types on a computer! High School sports are more about educating kids to be better prepared to live productive lives in society. His degrading of the Moapa Valley kids is totally uncalled for and defeats the purpose of High School sports and what the NIAA stands for! I am not a blogger, just appalled at the pathetic comment!
Sportfan. You are correct. I do make these picks to generate controversy. That is what picks are! See all the comments above yours, they are all arguing for or against a pick I made. This is not a story based on facts and reporting. These are picks based solely on my opinion. I'm glad you can tell the difference.
Also, I do type these on a computer in an office. Would you prefer I scratch them into a rock?
Apparently you don't follow these much, because my picks regarding Moapa have been a running joke for weeks. Humor is really lost on some people.
Do me a favor sportfan, can you please explain exactly what me wanting a team to lose shows about my character. Yes, I want Moapa to lose. I also want the Miami Dolphins to lose tonight. And this weekend I really want the Utah Grizzlies to lose three times to the Las Vegas Wranglers. Oh my, I'm a horrible person.
I picked against Foothill, Liberty and Cimarron too. All great teams with I'm sure great kids, but I still have to make a selection. Not everyone can win.
Sportfan, you're probably one of those people that sues schools to stop dodgeball from being played, right? News flash, there are winners and losers.
Finally, Ray Brewer wants Moapa to lose in his pick too. I guess he's a bad person as well...at least I have good company.
Thanks for reading sportfan and have a wonderful day.
To Steve Silver, I just hope the "Silver Curse" works.
GO TRUCKEE WOLVERINES!!!!
Steve Silver,
I don't usually comment on things like this but after seeing your reasoning for why you want Moapa Valley to lose is pathetic and childish. If you want Moapa to lose because of some statistic or whatever than that's fine. Moapa fans wouldn't be as bothered. But when you just say you want Moapa to lose because you just want them to and your sick of their ego than that's where people have a problem. And just reading your comment above, being that sarcastic to people who are obviously upset about what you wrote doesn't exactly bring any validity to your argument. It makes you look childish!
Now as far as my predictions go, I think Moapa Valley will win because I don't think Truckee has been tested all season. Every win has been a blow out for them. It will be interesting to see how Truckee reacts if they see themselves trailing during the game. Moapa Valley has been underrated all year. Kellan Weiss the QB has made tremendous strides from the first game of the season to now. He is cutting down on his turnovers and is making big plays. He will be the difference maker for Moapa. We will need an excellent passing performance from Kellan if we expect to win this game. I think he delivers.
Moapa Valley 20 - Truckee 14
how about you people from moapa relax and just use Silvers words as a motivational weapon. Hey his job is to have us get on this blog and argue and debate why our teams is better and their picks is wrong. Don't get your panties in a bunch...jus write your statement on why your team is going to win and then send the comment..no need to attack the writers character or his moral standards.... I'm Just Saying... Now write more about Liberty's defense Silver......lol....Go Patriots...
The difference maker for Moapa Valley is #5, Matt Newton. Truckee will have to contain #5 in order to win. He has the most "touches" during their games and the Wolverines will have to hold him in check if they want this State title.
Yes the biggest playmaker for Moapa Valley is Matt Newton, your absolutley right! he gets the most touches and has the most yards out of anyone on that offense, but Matt can't carry the team by himself. My point was that Kellan Weiss QB #10 will have to have a great game in order for Moapa Valley to win the game. If Kellan doesn't play well then we won't win. Matt Newton will get some yard just because he is a hard match-up for anybody on Truckee's side. But Kellan will have to get Kasen Lewis, Dillon Gordon, and Hayden Cooper involved as well. If we can't do that then we will lose, because I expect Truckee to be completely focused on Matt Newton.
Dxyl,
It's easy for you to say when it's not your team. If this was his first time doing it then I dont think people would mind, but this has gone on for a while now. he does it because people react to it and it creates arguement. That's why i said it is childish and pathetic. It's funny to do it once but when he uses those kinds of reasons for the past few games, it gets kinda old. Just as a fan it's kind of annoying and disrespectful to see. But that's just my opinion on it. If he decides to keep on doing it then that's his own business.
21 comments before any game has been played. That's pretty cool.Good job Steve and Ray.
thanks dxyl. At least someone here gets it.
rebelfanforever45, I love you. Please keep commenting about how you hate that I write things just to get comments.
Silver,
I don't hate that you want to get comments on your blogs. That's your job as a professional journalist. And by the looks of it you do a pretty good job. But when you start attacking fans just from one school over the past few weeks just so you can get more comments then that is childish. You think by saying, "The last thing Moapa fans need is a state title to boost their egos. Since I want the Pirates to lose, I'm picking them. The Silver Curse lives on.
is a good way to have fans just talk about their predictions and give their reasons for why they are going to win? That just makes the fans upset. So if your main reasoning is to just have people comment about their team and gives reasons for why they think they will win, then I suggest you do the same, instead of saying ignorant comments like that just so you can get a few Moapa fans upset and to comment on your blog.
Go Dragons!!!!!!!!!! Decided to break his up a bit. :)
I am a Moapa fan and I think Silver's comments are funny. It is a running gag. He picked Foothill to beat them and we all know how that turned out.
Keep the anti-Pirate action going. It brings us luck.

It may come as a surprise to you but Moapa Valley has done fine in the past without the
"anti-pirate" action. Also getalife, you are a basic high school alumni so of course it seems funny to you. And like I said before, if he were to do this kind of thing for a one time deal then that's fine. I would think it was funny too. But you also can wear out that same joke if you do it week after week. That's all my point is. Because personally I'm not that upset about it, but there are other moapa fans that have posted before me that clearly are. So it would just be nice if he didn't keep stirring the pot so to speak just so he can makes Moapa fans upset and get comments is all.
So, what's the deal, did Silver go to Virgin Valley for high school? Honestly, I don't know where he went to H.S.
LakeTahoeguy,
I honestly don't know. he may have posted where he has gone to high school before, but i don't know where. I think Brewer, the other reporter, went to Boulder City but I could be wrong on that as well. Thats what some of the other people have said in prior articles. I am a Moapa Alumni as you can probably tell. I graduated in 2005. I played against Truckee in the 2004 state championship. they beat us 28-0. Jamie Mahler, I'm not sure if thats how you spell it, and Paul tierany were good players for them. That was a really good team. I have alot of respect for Coach Shaffer and the Truckee program.
Brewer graduated from Chaparral and I'm not from Nevada
Silver,
Thanks for the information. I did not know that. Where at exactly? I'm just curious. I also want to apologize for all of the Moapa fans that argued with you in a dis-respectful manner. Moapa fans are very passionate about our sports team, and sometimes we express ourselves a little more vocally then we should at times, (including myself). It's just we are a small town and we always feel like we have to prove ourselves against other big time schools to get respect. And if you or Brewer ever get a chance to go to a Moapa Valley Football game sometime in the future, especially if we were to play mesquite, I think you would enjoy the passion and atmosphere expressed from both sides. I'm curious as to how your guys picks turn out this weekend.
I graduated from Mt. Lebanon, a public school outside of Pittsburgh. I'd equate it to a Green Valley type of school.
I know plenty about the Moapa passion. I wish more schools had it. When I was a kid everyone in the district went to the game on Friday night. Western PA football is a little more intense than Southern Nevada, but I just wish regular season games here had packed stands or at least more than a handful of students supporting their classmates.
Keep up the lively debate...it's almost game time.
RebelFanForever45, Thanks. That 2004 team also had a very good defense as you most likely remember.
Re: Silver, It just seems to me that he must have some "cross tie" with M.V.
We up here in the North have always respected M.V., .....and Virgin Valley, as a matter of fact.
Mahler and Tierney were both very good players. Mahler ended up going to ARMY, and I believe he has now graduated. Tierney originally went to Humboldt State, in NoCal, but not sure what became of his career.
This year's team finally has a "true" QB in Ben Bolton, rather than a converted RB. Thankfully, those converted RB's did a very good job, getting Truckee to the playoffs every year since that 2004 season.
We are all looking forward to a very good game on Saturday.
Silver,
Oh wow PA! Yeah I'm sure most high school football teams, no matter which state, have better fan support then most Vegas School's. I don't know why that is. I never went to school in Las Vegas so I wouldn't know. Haha, I'll try my best to keep up the debate! The one game I will keep my eye on this weekend is the Foothill vs. Basic game. That one will come down to the wire. Foothill has gotten hot at the right moment. And after beating a usually dominant team in Las Vegas High, they must be oozing with confidence right now.
GROUP HUG EVERYBODY!!! hehehe... The debate IS lively. I love it. It's more an indication of how much MV supporters love their team rather than total disregard for professional journalism. Brewer and Silver keep up the lively entertainment. Some of it is thought-provoking and some of it is straight up comical. ALL OF IT is entertaining to say the least. I'm absolutely confident any disrespect is not intentional and purely speculative. Bottom line...the teams that are left are in it to win it! Good luck to everybody! GO LIBERTY PATRIOTS!!
well said VegasVegas. It should be a great night for football tonight.
Hey Ray and Steve I enjoy your weekly high school picks and articles on high school football. Your enthusiasm and support shows. Thank you.
Rebelfan, I lived in Moapa for eight years and my son was a standout on two of the state championship teams.
I think the Moapa fans feed off this stuff. We should put Silver on our payroll he is such a motivating force.
BTW, as of this posting Foothill is a footnote.
Go Basic, Go Moapa
stick to hockey steve
Ouch, Moapa...Oh, at least BC scored on Truckee! Keep believing that you can compete with 4A!
