Prep Football: Week 12 Picks

The week of Nov. 13

Brewer's Picks
Last Week:
9-1

Season:
137-26 (.840)

Brewer vs. Silver

Las Vegas Sun reporters Ray Brewer and
Steve Silver attempt to pick
the winning team from prep contests
across the Las Vegas area.

Silver's Picks
Last Week:
9-1

Season:
131-32 (.804)

Gorman is too strong and physical. The Gaels will overmatch and wear down the Panthers.
Gorman 34, Palo Verde 20

Either way I expect a great game, but in an effort to be different, I'll go with the Panthers.
Palo Verde 27, Gorman 24

Cimarron makes amends for its fluke regular season loss to the Longhorns.
Cimarron 45, Legacy 19

Brewer thinks Cimarron is headed to the state championship. I beg to differ.
Legacy 31, Cimarron 28

Las Vegas begins its quest for a seventh straight Sunrise crown with a victory.
Las Vegas 27, Foothill 8

Wildcats ride the Farrell Victor train to victory.
Las Vegas 35, Foothill 20

Liberty doesn't have the athletes to match the speed of Canyon Springs.
Canyon Springs 32, Liberty 17

You never know which Liberty team is going to show up, but I'm still going to take the unpredictable Patriots.
Liberty 24, Canyon Springs 20

Reed scores four TDs to help coach Goroff eliminate his alma mater.
Del Sol 39, Valley 13

Perhaps the most lopsided playoff game of the week. Dragons cruise.
Del Sol 35, Valley 7

Desert Pines knows the drill — Basic controls the clock and its defense makes your offense look like a Pop Warner team. That's what happened earlier this fall.
Basic 21, Desert Pines 0

No superstars on this Basic squad, but plenty of heart and pure grit.
Basic 17, Desert Pines 7

Fernley coach Jeff Knutson won't enjoy his trip back to Overton, where he guided the Pirates to the 2000 state title.
Moapa Valley 38, Fernley 12

It kills me to do this, but the Pirates will come out on top.
Moapa Valley 28, Fernley 14

Tough commute up North for the Eagles.
Truckee 40, Boulder City 6

If Brewer is picking against Boulder City, then they really don't have a chance.
Truckee 31, Boulder City 13

  1. Brewer, I agree with ya on most of the Games but Cimarron won't beat Legacy by that much it will be closer than 45-19 and Canyon Springs won't beat Liberty? What do you mean Liberty doesn't have the Athletes they seemed to have the athletes when Liberty beat them earlier this season 21-13 did Liberty lose athletes??

  2. Brewer and Silver, whats it gonna take for you to make the 1 hr. drive out to Overton to watch Moapa play Fernley??? What else could you be doing Saturday at 1:00PM?? I promise it will be worth the drive!!

  3. What am I doing on a Saturday afternoon? Two words -- college football.

  4. legacy WONT lose....,,james poole, stephen nixon, and zach barbara can run all they want..but legacy's deshae edwards, martell crockett,Lj mcmorris, and the X factor devin weidemann will be too much...not to mention legacys solid recieving corps...(cimmarron cant even throw)...so brewer youll once again be wrong....Legacy by 10

  5. A 49-15 win is a little much. Legacy DID get a fluke win the first time, but I don't think they're going to get blown out. Cimarron should take this game, but I think it'll be close than that. 32-24 Spartans

  6. Come on Silver, thats what TIVO's and DVR's are for!!!!

  7. Truckee has given up a total of 3 points in their last 4 games. Those 3 points came from Spring Creek on a field goal as time expired.
The most they have given up all season was 15, in Week 1 at Bishop, CA. The only other team to score double digits against Truckee was Lowry, in a 63-12 Wolverine victory.
Congratulations to Boulder City for making it to the semi-finals for the first time in a long time.
Your first round win over Virgin Valley last week was your season highlight, and now your season will come to an end at Truckee on Saturday.
You can go to www.truckee.com for Lodging, Restaurants, etc.
Please enjoy your visit to our community, Lake Tahoe, fine dining, the scenery, etc.

  8. To Fresco12:
These stats are based off of Maxpreps.com
James Poole has 1506 rushing yards. That's 238 more yards than Legacy's best rusher Deshae Edwards(1268).Edwards also has 26 MORE carries than Poole this season.Stephen Nixon has 977 rushing yards. That's 261 more than Legacy's second best rusher Martell Crockett(716).Granted Nixon does get the ball more than Crockett(121 carries to 84).Zach Barbara has 127 more yards than Legacy's 3rd best runner Lj McMorris(622 to 495) on 13 less carries. As far as receiver corps Legacy's receivers have combined for 10 TD's this season.Only 2 more than Cimarron-Memorial,a team you say can't even throw.

  9. To Steve Silver,
You really think Boulder City can hold Truckee to 31 points? Truckee is averaging 49 points a game, and nearly 59 in their last 3 games.
Truckee's defense alone has outscored their opponents total points this season.

  10. No TV this week, however if you're sitting home, or at work on Friday night, log onto the Prep Sports Nevada live internet broadcast of Palo Verde at Bishop Gorman. PSN Preview at 6:40pm, Game time at 7pm from Fertitta Field. David and Dan with the call.

  11. To LakeTahoeGuy,
Boulder City has held its opponents to an average of 13.1 points per game, while pitching four shutouts. So yes, I stand by my prediction.

Sportsarefun, I'm actually heading to Utah for the Wranglers road trip now, so visiting Moapa isn't even an option this weekend.

  12. Foothill beats Las Vegas High and the Southeast Division goes 4-0 tonight where a Henderson school is GUARANTEED a spot in the state finals! It was a great week for Henderson tonight! Good job Foothill, Basic, Liberty and Del Sol!!!

  13. LakeTahoeGuy...35-8, not far off from my 31-13 prediction, eh?

  14. Steve, "Props" to you. Not far off at all. The B.C. Eagles gave it their all. They have some very good players. Before the game, I was telling people Truckee 47-0.
No excuses here, Truckee did have a TD called back for a "block in the back" penalty, and the Wolverines did "bite" on the trick play which gave B.C. their only score. Truckee will have to play better to beat the Pirates.
The Moapa Valley vs. Truckee game should be a good one.
