The Del Sol High baseball team is starting to play like a playoff contender in its fifth year of existence.

Del Sol beat Mar Vista High of Imperial Beach, Calif., 9-5 on Thursday to capture its division of the prestigious San Diego Lions Club Tournament. The Dragons finished the tournament with a 5-0 record.

Del Sol was not in the same top bracket as Southeast Division opponents Green Valley and Silverado, but its division still featured several quality opponents, coach Brock Taylor said.

Taylor is hoping the victory gives his team momentum to make a run at its first-ever postseason appearance.

“The kids are playing their best baseball. They have come together chemistry-wise and play hard every game,” Taylor said.

Chris Hampton led the Dragons with three hits and three RBIs in the championship game while Scottez Dobbins and Dan Doph each had two hits.

Del Sol beat Olympian High of San Diego 10-4 earlier on Thursday in the semifinals. Jerett Tufono gave up three runs over six innings to earn the victory.

Del Sol improves to 8-4 overall and 3-2 in the Southeast Division. They lost a league game 10-9 to Coronado before spring break. Taylor said the rematch April 30 could determine the league’s final playoff berth.
