College basketball season is officially less than two months away.
For several Mountain West fans, it's their school's next best chance for a winner in a major sport this season.
Anyways, the league is currently gathering media votes for its preseason poll, preseason all-conference team and various other honors. Here's how yours truly voted. Figured we can have some discussion in the comments section below.
Poll
1) BYU
2) UNLV
3) San Diego State
4) New Mexico
5) Utah
6) TCU
7) Wyoming
8) Colorado State
9) Air Force
All-MWC team
— Jimmer Fredette, BYU
— Carlon Brown, Utah
— Billy White, SDSU
— Derrick Jasper, UNLV
— Zvonko Buljan, TCU
Preseason Player of the Year — Jimmer Fredette, BYU
Preseason Newcomer of the Year — Derrick Jasper, UNLV
Preseason Freshman of the Year — Kawhi Leonard, SDSU
Let's discuss ... below ...
As for former Rebels running back Frank Summers ...
Frank Summers, who was a driving force for the UNLV offense over the last two seasons, was placed on injured reserve by the Pittsburgh Steelers on Tuesday afternoon. This, in effect, ends his rookie season after the defending Super Bowl champs made him a fifth-round pick in April's draft.
In response, the Steelers re-signed veteran Carey Davis, who was one of their final players cut at the end of training camp.
Who knows what the future holds for Summers in Pittsburgh? According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's report, head coach Mike Tomlin dubbed Summers' back injury as "mysterious."

Hard to argue one way or the other with so many new impact players in the MWC this year. BYU is getting the most love, but I'm hoping this is the year we win the regular season and the tournament. GO REBELS!
Your on the right track Ryan. Compared to other publications and websites, I'd have to say this is the most reasonable run-down I've seen to date. Let's hope the top two are reversed.
I really see Chace being an 18-20 ppg producer and he might find himself on the list come March. TCU should be better this year and I'd kick them up a notch or two.
Yeah, it's hard to give UNLV the nod ahead of BYU right now just because BYU is more of a known quantity. But, you're right, Smitty, Chace has just as much of a chance to be a standout player and all-league performer as anyone. But the thing with both he and Derrick is that neither of them have played in a game in almost two years. Right now, BYU I'd say is the team to beat, but that is unbelievably tentative. I think SDSU is a major sleeper with their infusion of new talent, too.
well its a good thing no one gives a sh*t about your picks sufferin...
meet me in person and i will bet you a hundred dollars per team that unlv finishes ahead of new mexico utah tcu and sdsu..... (thats 100 each bet 4 seperate bets)
how confident are you now???
stop runnin your gums when you wont back it up!
the preseaon number 1 has been a curse lately anyways. i'm MORE then happy to put byu at numero uno. sufferin.. i was just starting to like you too. i understand some of your points sometimes... just the way you package it up doesnt work for anyone. im all about not being a sheep and following unlv blindly, but you are the most negative unlv fan out there and basically unpleaseable. i know you like attention and love the fact that everyone knows who you are, but its really getting boring.
I like the picks a lot. While I am of course hoping UNLV takes the conference crown this year, placing them at first would feel like blatant homerism. BYU gets the nod for now, based on returning talent.
I might bump TCU up a notch or two. Christian is a very good coach, and they have as much coming back as anyone. I just don't know much about their new guys.
I think another guy to keep an eye on for the All-MWC team is Afam Muojeke at Wyoming. He won't have much help, but he's a talented player.
I think you bleed scarlet and gray buddy, and I certainly can't fault you for that!! ;)
But seriously, Jasper hasn't played one second for UNLV yet and you already vote him first team all-MWC?
6 teams have a great chance to win the MWC outright this season, and UNLV is certainly one of them.
I tell you, it's just good to see "two months" and "Rebel basketball" in the same sentence. I've gotta agree with Smitty about Chace. Just from what I saw at last years "First Look", I've been telling people I see him as a possible POY candidate his senior year. I do believe that the biggest difference this season will be the "Bigs". I think Brice got a good wakeup call last year and did what it takes to be relevant in D-1 hoops. Lopez didn't show me much during Findlay's run at the High School championships, but alot of articles are saying otherwise. Hoping that Matt Shaw has developed a good mean streak in him, that and his ability to pop out for the three are going to make him dangerous. Ryan, haven't heard much about Darris Santee? Just feels good to be talking Rebel hoops again with people in the know, except for Sufferin'. He sounds like someone who had money on UNLV when they lost to Duke. Get over it!
The inside game has to be more productive this year if the Rebs want to be a factor in the MWC race and a trip to the NCAA's. Between Massamba, Shaw, Lopez, and Santee there needs to be much more rebounding, shot blocking and a defensive presence. None of them has the ability to be good scorers but maybe they can at least keep defenses somewhat honest and command a double team or two to free up driving lanes and open 3's for our perimeter guys. Our offense last year too many times ended up with a guard having to dribble and force up a contested shot with the shot clock winding down. (As evidence UNLV only averaging somewhere in the 50's for the last 5-6 games). To be a top 25 team and a player in the conference race each year you have to be a balanced squad. Can't wait to see who is ready to play. The competition for playing time should make for a better players and a better squad. Lets go Runnin Rebs.
