If you’re on the hunt for that perfect gem, take heart. The World Jewelry Center — delayed a year — has moved a step closer to reality with the Las Vegas City Council’s approval of the project.

Located in downtown’s Union Park site, the high rise tower will contain gem and jewelry dealers, manufacturers and wholesalers as well as offices and condos, and a jewelry and gem museum. Think: the World Market Center except for bright and shiny things instead of furniture.

The project had been planned to open in 2010, but developers announced last month that it would be pushed back a year due to architectural and construction delays. The Center now plans to break ground in 2009, with completion in 2011.
