Findlay defeats Garfield Heights, 60-50

Mike Peck expected a tough, tight basketball game Sunday in Kettering, Ohio, and he got it.

The Findlay College Prep coach guided the Pilots to a 60-50 victory over Cleveland (Ohio) Garfield Heights in the Flyin’ to the Hoop tournament.

It wasn’t easy. Garfield led, 27-26, at halftime.

“They played a three-quarter-length zone that stifled us a bit,” Peck said. “We couldn’t get any rhythm or flow. And we haven’t shot the 3-point well in a long time.”

The Pilots (19-0) were 3-for-12 from long range against Garfield.

“They played us fired up,” Peck said. “They matched up well, brought their A game, and it showed. We played well enough in the end to pull it out.”

Senior guard Avery Bradley led Findlay with 22 points, junior point guard Cory Joseph had 12 and UNLV-bound center Carlos Lopez chipped in with 11.

Findlay plays Wayne (Ohio) on Monday. Saturday, the Pilots play Houston Westbury Christian in Laurel County, Ky. In two weekends, they participate in a tournament in Montverde, Fla.

Findlay returns home to play Foothill at the Henderson International School, with which the Pilots are affiliated, on Feb. 11. Findlay is at Bishop Gorman on Feb. 12.
