Great, more free publicity.
I will give Mr. Hsieh credit, he puts HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS of HIS OWN MONEY where his mouth is to see his dreams come true.
He deserves press and credit for that. He does not stand back and complain about how thing are, he attempts to do better for Vegas and himself.
And Vegaslee, you on the other hand, sit around and complain about the complainers on a newspaper's website. Perhaps if you are so inspired by him you should be more like him?
And...its been nearly a week without the WE LOVE TONY! article headline on the Sun, its about time!
He should just buy the Sun and then Our New Dear Leader, I mean Hsieh, can boast about his ideas every day.
What concerns me about all of this hype is that, at the moment, it's all just hype. These articles are all the same - Reporter X, feeling ultra "cool" for being in the presence, has a drink at a bar downtown with Tony and listens to him talk about what he would do if he ruled the world.
That's all well and good but Walt Disney he ain't. Talk is cheap. When I start to see actual money being put to good use and creating measurable results then I will be impressed. I also worry about one businessman attempting to put his own personal stamp on an entire urban area. Remember a guy called Jim Murren who said he was going to create the most popular new urban center in the world? Um yeah...we all know how that worked out.
This Zappos worship is getting sort of weird. If the company weren't owned by Amazon we would never had heard of Mr. H. or his grandiose ideas for Downtown.
More power to him I say but let's see some magic before we all go gaga for the magician.
I give him credit. I wouldn't live In the area where his apartment is located. I wouldn't walk those streets at night either. Billionaires in the midst of pan handlers?...sounds almost wannabe bohemian. With that kind of wealth at my disposal, I'm not walking over to a run down bar and getting pistol whipped in that neighorhood. I've been there during the night, during the day. No one is going to tell me it's on the upswing. Millionaire (billionaire) yuppies walking those downtown streets among the beggars, thugs and homeless? Pass.
If Tony can bring his vision to reality, more power to him. If I worked myself up to that kind of wealth..I'd rather be golfing here, surfing in Malibu. He sounds like a true workaholic.
Mr. Hsieh is a great for Vegas!
"I wouldn't live In the area where his apartment is located. I wouldn't walk those streets at night either."
TomD -- Hseih lives in the Ogden, and the neighborhood is a lot nicer than what you posted. The El Cortez is across the street and its security goons patrol about a block out, they keep that close area clean for their patrons. And Metro's bike patrols are heavier than usual all around there. Lots of tourists.
East Fremont, starting at the Western, would be where you shouldn't walk around at night. That's closer to my neighborhood.

TeamSG1,
Read your post. Who is complaining about people posting here today?
I guess I should feel honored that you feel the need to make a comment about every post I make here. Glad I can give your life some meaning.
Have a great day!
Well, you are about the only person here except for that little hairdresser that consistently posts stupid remarks requiring a response.
So yes, you are indeed very "special".

I'm always being solicited for cash on the streets surrounding the Ogden. Some are pretty gnarly looking. The two empy lots across the street usually have a few undesirables loitering around. My point, for a billionaire..there's much better places to live. I really don't want to rely on the rent of cops from the El Cortez to secure my existence walking the streets.
I hadn't been downtown for a while, but my husband wanted to take a friend to that video-gamer bar, Insert Coins. We ate at the Heart Attack Grill,(yucky, but funny), Zip-Lined Fremont, drank and played at the bar and had a great time. I didn't feel unsafe at any time. I was only solicited once, and that was, "Do you happen to have a cigarette?"
I hope it works out great for downtown and Zappos.
