Why Macau tourists didn’t flip for Cirque du Soleil

(via The Wall Street Journal) · February 8, 2012 · 10:46 PM

Now that Cirque du Soleil has said it’s shuttering its Zaia show in Macau, the question is: How can this gambling mecca broaden its appeal if it can’t hold on to an established entertainment brand that’s successful in the West? Las Vegas has reinvented itself as a tourist destination with dozens of big-budget, live entertainment options. Visitors can see multiple Cirque du Soleil shows, as well as regular performances by the likes of Celine Dion, Elton John and Rod Stewart. Macau’s two show offerings (Zaia and the House of Dancing Water) pale in comparison — even though its gambling revenue far surpasses what the Strip generates.
