(via Detroit Free Press) · May 19, 2011 · 10:21 AM

Detroit businessman Don Barden, one of Detroit’s business elite who was the first African American to own a Las Vegas casino and the first to own a major cable TV franchise, has died, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Barden had been fighting lung cancer and died early this morning at the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit. He was 67.

"We extend the state's sympathies to his family," Gaming Commission Chairman Peter Bernhard said at Thursday's commission meeting.

  3. I grew up in Vegas, leaving 35 years ago. When I visit Vegas, I usually stay at the Fitzgeralds, it is a good deal. RIP, Don Barden.
