A Las Vegas man is suing The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for medical expenses after he injured his back in 2007 performing baptisms for the dead, according to the Salt Lake Tribune. In a civil suit filed in 3rd District Court on Wednesday, Daniel Dastrup claims he suffered a severe herniated disk in his lumbar spine after performing about 200 baptisms on Aug. 25, 2007. The then 25-year-old claims some of the young men and women he completely immersed in water in the name of the dead weighed as much as 250 pounds.

Now this is just downright funny.
It happened back in 2007. What was the rush in filing the lawsuit?
dear god.
At first I thought they were dunking dead people....hahahaha...
Exactly who are these dead people that are being baptized? They must not be LDS because they would already be baptized.....
Mormons believe that they can save people after death through baptism by proxy. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baptism_for...
LMAO...don't they weigh less underwater? What a ridiculous ritual.
ridiculous in deed...oh, I mean merciful. I get those confused sometimes.
Chunky asks:
How was this the church's fault?
That's what Chunky wants to know!
Maybe he was an paid employee. 200 of anything is a large number to do repetitively, especially if the technique is stressful to a specific body part.
Lift with the legs, not the back!
Would it be mean of me to say he deserved it for baptising the dead? If they wanted to be baptised Mormon, they would have done it before they died.
skerlehdee,
You don't get paid to do baptisms.
Shannon,
These names are submitted by Mormon family members who want to give their relatives the chance, for what they believe is, eternal salvation. What's wrong with that?
reagan21,
If I wanted to be baptized I would have had it done by now. Do it after I die and I'm showing up to haunt somebody.
At this point it must be pointed out that presumably Harry Reid supports this practice as he is a member of LDS.
Maybe a Higher Power was sending a message to this Mr. Daniel Dustup.
Here is a better link for more information about Baptisms for the Dead from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints ... http://www.mormon.org/faq/baptism-for-th...
Better than Wiki-pedia.
It is sad that someone who volunteered to perform this ordinance is now suing.
At least in reality it has no effect.
My dead spouse and the whole rest of the family were not Mormon, except for one family member became a staunch Mormon and I presume has had everyone else "baptized" as they pass on. After they are dead, and cannot object. Believe, me, my spouse would have objected. I guess they think they are adding to the amount of Mormons in the afterlife. As I understand it each guy gets his own individual planet.
This same baptizer divorced his spouse, whom he had married in the Temple, and married another Mormon. Do all three of them have to share a planet after death?
Which Fire Dept does he work for?
I love it. Put me on that Jury!!!
Let's see, save the dead,But ignore the injuries of the living doing the saving. Why would it have to come to the point of sueing for a church to put forth a helping hand for this guy? What am I missing here?Chunky,I hope you would want to know this!
Is that even in The Holy Bible or is that something they made up?
And we think other cultures and countries have strange religious rituals!
I'm a firm believer in the first amendment. I'll happily support the rights of people to observe rituals based on ridiculous bronze-age myths -- but in return, I want the faithful to respect my right to exercise free speech, which includes the right to point out that leaders of a 21st century nation shouldn't be hamstrung by absurd stories about burning shrubs and talking reptiles.
200 dead people? What did they do, bring them in by the truck load, and tell them to hold their breath? This has a whole new meaning to the phrase "I see dead people"
1 Cor 15:29 "Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead, if the dead rise not at all? why are they then baptized for the dead?" Or in other words "Of course there is a resurrection. Why else would we be baptized for the dead?"
How many wives can one man have dunked at one time?
I meant if a guy has 11 wives, does he get a discount dunking or is this a free service?
I personally believe this ritual is done not for the dead but for the living. We all do rituals to support our belief in a higher power and we go to that lighted place after life here on Earth. This is one of these rituals for Mormons to believe. As for the person sueing, he may have a point of a safety violation. Perhaps the Mormon board of authority needs to take a look into solutions. Perhaps 2 people helping in the ritual or having sitting position of someway. And notims: Mormon church has rejected polygamy. Though some extremist do practice it, it is against the law and not practiced or accepted by headquarters.
