The Nevada Sagebrush, the student newspaper of the University of Nevada-Reno, called for the impeachment of Gov. Jim Gibbons in a Tuesday editorial. According to the editorial: In his budget proposal last week, he suggested crippling higher education with a $427 million cut while simultaneously condemning even the thought of a tax increase. At first glance, that idea is absurd. But when considering the future impacts for even a year at such gross under funding, the idea transcends incompetence: It is nothing short of misconduct, an impeachable offense, on the part of the governor to seriously propose such a cut.

Like I have stated, I voted for this idiot and would gladly sign the petition to force him out. There has to be a stupidity clause in there somewhere.(for me of course)
It is so sad that the editor of a college student newspaper is void of the knowledge in the world.
"while simultaneously condemning even the thought of a tax increase"
In the Gibbon's budget, there is a hotel room tax increase.
Jim Gibbons has not shown an ounce of leadership as our Governor. His short-sightedness is going to destroy our state.
Time to recall him, and send him packing.
Also, political views are not impeachable offenses.
If there were then almost every year we would hear somebody whining about impeachment because of their opponent's political views.
Hey......wait a minute....we do hear a lot of whining about impeachment almost every year.
Instead of this dumb impeachment editorial, the student should have listed his solution to the problem.
The governor is protecting jobs in both the private and government sector. I think we should follow his plan.
I have a feeling that the student is not going to like the Buckley's plan either. Currently, she is hiding under a rock and will not disclose her plan.
Turns out, according to jfnance32, we can't trust the word of the Jim Gibbons.
Let's recall Gibbons' own words:
"I, Jim Gibbons, pledge to the taxpayers of Nevada and all the people of this State, that I will oppose and veto any and all efforts to increase taxes."
Gibbons' budget included a room tax increase.
Add this with his ignorance of state law (or willful defiance of state law) in his attempt to illegally appoint a crony to a posh six-figure salary, and I can only come to the conclusion that Gibbons is either too ignorant to hold the position, or he's too dishonest to hold the position.
Or some unholy combination of the two.
I vote for "unholy combination" of ignorance and dishonesty. The Gibber worked hard to embarrass us with numerous personal details of his love life. Since that didn't seem to faze Nevada voters, maybe his crusade to end Higher Ed will.
While mining companies continue to extract hundreds of millions of dollars out of Nevada's lands without paying a cent in taxes, or deducting 80% of their income, higher education is facing a cut that will devastate Nevada's ability to expand and attract businesses.
The Gibbers answer? He swears he won't support a tax increase, then writes one into his budget. I heard Chuck Muth threw a fit.
Can't win the Dems, can't win the conservatives. Who DOES support Gibbons, anymore?
Bueller? Bueller?
"...we can't trust the word of the Jim Gibbons."
Jim Gibbons has the hallmark traits of a disinterested party. He is disinterested in his job, except for feeling powerful, which he is addicted to.
Impeach? I'm not sure it's an impeachable offense to be a poor governor. If that were true, Bush never would have gotten out of Texas. Huh...too bad, now that I think about it.
The sad fact is that Nevada had ample opportunity to reject Gibbons and all he represents by not electing him. It's not like we didn't have a laundry list of good reasons to NOT vote for the man. His "no tax increase" pledge got him in; ironically, now it will be his undoing.
This guy has simply been involved in too many scandals and should step aside. That or some party or group just needs to mobilize supporters and sign enough names to get him recalled. Really at this point a room full of chimps smoking and banging on typewriters would be preferable to him. That or a mental patient who's had a full frontal lobotomy.
Some of his problems are more flimsy (like his attempt at a tax write off for his "ranch", I mean really during a recession you don't want to give a little back?). Unfortunately a lot of others are far more real and pressing. He's having a nasty and public divorce that really shows what he's like. He's hired an illegal immigrant to clean house (way to support Nevadans and America Jimbo). He had that texting controversy (really I've known high schoolers who text less). And there's others. I mean he should be recalled for at least being dumber than a bag of hammers. Most people with an iota of intelligence would've kept a low profile after one of those scandals, but he keeps on swinging. Seriously do I have to start the petition?
Where does one sign up for the impeachment signature drive?
OH MY GOD!
The governor text messaged somebody.
The world is coming to an END!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nance, nice snarky comment. But considering that he texted a woman at three in the morning while he was still married is suspect. Additionally the fact that he was doing this with a government phone and it cost us tax payers for him to act like a schoolboy is what people got angry about.
Jesus you are so lopsided. First you want to slash the throat of all education in the goal of saving money, but small easy ways, such as making the governor pay for his texting is beyond you? Grow up.
"But considering that he texted a woman at three in the morning while he was still married is suspect. Additionally the fact that he was doing this with a government phone and it cost us tax payers "
This coming from the crowd who still to this day thinks it was no big deal that a President committed a felony by lying under oath about having sex with an intern in the oval office.
OH MY GOD!
Another text message!!!!!!!!!
What we will do!!!!!!!!!
And what about his broken oath to the citizens of the state, jfnance32? It seems like you are unwilling to admit his word is not worth anything.
Or what about his attempt to appoint a buddy to a six-figure job, willfully ignoring state law in the process? Are you going to give him a free pass?
You can overlook the personally embarrassing things this Governor has done, but he broke his word to the citizens of the state, he broke his fundamental campaign promise, and he broke the law in attempting to appoint his friend to a posh job.
I guess jfnance32 doesn't care that Gibbons has no integrity.
Wow, where in the article is Bill Clinton mentioned at all. not to mention that happened over 8 years ago. Just get over the fact that Gibbons is morally bankrupt and hasn't the confidence of the voters or his party.
Just keep dancing around the fact that people need to recall Jimbo.
Or do you have to dredge up Bill Clinton everytime a republican does something wrong. Totally pathetic and evasive.
It is pathetic but funny whenever you bring up the divorce and the text messaging.
I see JFNance continues to stump for his idiot Governor.
A room tax increase is a tax on "VISITORS", moron.
Nevada corporations are still not being responsible to Nevada.
Impeach the idiot king Jim Gibbons. Working less then 5 hours a week shows him to be the pig at the public trough that he is. A total worthless investment of taxpayers money.
"This coming from the crowd who still to this day thinks it was no big deal that a President committed a felony by lying under oath about having sex with an intern in the oval office."
And this Gibbons defense comes from the man who cannot get over the Clinton sex lie. A double standard of epic proportions. This one is obvious, even for you.
When Nance encounters arguments he cannot answer, he flees in a panic.
Gibbons, who can't be held to his word... who lied to voters when he took an oath to never support a tax increase.
Gibbons, who can't be held to his word... who took an oath to uphold the laws of the state and then broke them when Gibbons tried to appoint his friend to a position he has plans on eliminating.
Gibbons who lied about his weird midnight oath of office... who used a late-night oath to spurn a political adversary and then blamed the timing on the threat of terrorism!
The personal embarrassments aside, what accomplishments has Gibbons brought to the table, other than a broken promise to the neocons? He's presiding over a disastrous state economy and has offered little to nothing in terms of ideas to get it back on track.
Is it too late to expect true leadership out of our Governor?
Buckley's speech was void of any meaningful substance.
She could have said there will be tons of new taxes increases coming down the line.
She did not.
She said there will be cuts and tax increases. That describes nothing of substance. That could mean that she will adopt the governor's budget which has cuts and tax increases.
Of courses, she choose to hide under a rock.
She is a true leader......not.
She is not the Governor, jfnance32. Gibbons is.
I don't know why you are so obsessed with expecting a state legislator to act as the Governor. I guess you do not have any faith in Gibbons.
Furthermore, whatever shortcomings Barbara Buckley has PALES in comparison to the outright incompetence of Gibbons.
Buckley is working to lead Nevada. Gibbons is disinterested and only willing to pursue a personal vendetta against an unpaid citizen who is working to make higher education better.
I respect Buckley, who is working hard to overcome the SLACK from Gibbons' failed leadership.
"And this Gibbons defense comes from the man who cannot get over the Clinton sex lie. A double standard of epic proportions. This one is obvious, even for you."
1. Clinton looked into camera and told the whole country a complete lie.
2. Clinton committed a felony when he lied under oath.
3. Clinton had sex with a person that he had power over and gave favors to that person over other staff in his charge.
4. Clinton has a history of trashing the many women that he had affairs with when their stories came out in public.
Gibbons has not remotely done any of that.
So it is easy not to have a cow over Gibbons text message "scandal" (LOL).
It is dumb to have a cow over Gibbons and not have one over Clinton's scandal.
As usual, the point sails over Nance's head.
He can't defend the Republican Governor for breaking his word to the citizens of the state of Nevada.
He can't defend the Republican Governor for ignoring and breaking the law in attempting to appoint a buddy to a six-figure job.
All he can do is tread water and point at people who haven't held office for nearly a decade.
Buckley is theBS's hero.......look she is hiding under the rock with him now.
Did she come out and say theBS favorite words....."We will pass large tax increases, like a billion dollars, and do very little cuts" ?
No.....she punted.
Is there really enough room for you two under that rock?
Gibbons presented a budget that saves government and private sector jobs.
That is what we need now.....jobs.
And you think slashing 450+ million from higher education is going to magically save jobs? Please, illuminate your fuzzy math.
As usual, you misstate and exaggerate my words. I didn't claim Buckley's a hero, but I have more faith in someone who stood in front of Nevada and told them the truth, than any faith I have in Gibbons, who not only lied to all citizens of Nevada, but who attempted to break the law in his appointment of Montero.
Condemn Clinton and Gibbons, and then address the salient points. Why are you giving Gibbons a blank check when it comes to his lying and his attempts to break the law?
Or, let it fly over your head...
Ops.....no defence of Buckley....she is your hero!!!!!!
You must defend her.
Surely, she is standing tall and telling us that the private citizens need to give up their jobs and money to save the almight state government machine.
Why are you giving Buckley a blank check when she hides under the rocks and punted on telling us all these taxes that will save our precious government machine?
or, let it fly over your head.........
Actually, he pretty clearly wrote he doesn't think she is a hero. Reading comprehension 101!
Buckley doesn't need to be defended. She is doing her job as a legislator, as well as doing Jim Gibbons job, trying to craft a plan that will not only address today's problems, but set us on a path for the future.
Gibbons gave us a budget that will crush higher education. In Buckley's speech, she brought up more revenue for the state, as well as cuts to some services. It is a much more balanced approach. I look forward to seeing what the Legislature has to offer us.
"Surely, she is standing tall and telling us that the private citizens need to give up their jobs and money to save the almight state government machine."
LOL, she said nothing of the sort. That's kind of a whopper of a lie.
"Why are you giving Buckley a blank check when she hides under the rocks and punted on telling us all these taxes that will save our precious government machine?"
Yes, Buckley deserves credit for doing the Governor's job. I guess jfnance32 thinks all state legislators need to submit a budget to the state of Nevada. What a joke!!!
Buckley doesn't need defending, she has done nothing wrong... unlike Gibbons, the lying, law-evading Governor who is derelict in his duties.
It is funny how jfnance32 can't defend his own buddy, the Governor. He has told us in the past that he thinks Gibbons is doing a good job. I guess lying and breaking the law is a good thing to jfnance32.
ksand99 and theBS are doing exactly what their hero did.....they are punting.
Actually, I wrote a well-reasoned response.
Your answer: nothing.
Who, exactly, is punting?
Where is the petition?
I'll sign it.
what is this -the jfinance friends and foes column? Get your own newspaper if you want to write. This is a comment section not a lecture forum.
The Governor's budget is DOA. The legislature will cobble together a bunch of half-measures that will limp us through the next two year budget cycle but will have no long-term impact on the fundamental problems of how the state is funded. And we'll be watching another special session before the end of the year to apply bubble gum and baling wire to the leaking ship of state.
BTW: Does anyone else expect to see the word "GOV" written across the back of Gibbon's suit when he turns around?
I think Frankenstein needs his neck bolt tightened and a fresh shock from the electrodes. Wake him up!
"This is a comment section not a lecture forum."
I find the interchange adds depth and data to the stories and helps to uncover public reaction and perspective. Free speech is free speech, yes?
As far as the specific Sun rules about these forums, nowhere does it say that someone may not lecture. That's good, because it would suck the life out of them and ruin a good thing for the Sun and its users.
I agree johnvegas. No need to have the Sun take time blocking people. You quickly learn the ids of the lecturers, irrational thinkers and those people just trying to geta rise out of people. For example I just ignore comments by jfnance. I also ignore most of those who engage with him, trying to make him stay on point because it's a lost cause.
Fascinating, hey mostly my response is to the repeaters - GET A LIFE! So is there a recall provision - can we get rid of the empty shirt in Carson City?
Oh, what is his phone number so we can ALL text him!
