Margarito banned from boxing in U.S. for a year

(via ESPN) · February 10, 2009 · 5:30 PM

The California State Athletic Commission revoked the licenses of Antonio Margarito and trainer Javier Capetillo Tuesday because of the foreign plaster-like substance that was discovered in the former welterweight champion's hand wraps before his fight against Shane Mosley in Los Angeles on Jan. 24.

The panel rejected Margarito's plea of ignorance, voting 7-0 on the revocation, which means that neither Margarito or Capetillo can participate in boxing in the United States for at least one year. After the year ban, both would have to reapply for licenses in California and go through another hearing.

Yahoo! Sports' Kevin Iole writes that Margarito's suspension should be stiffer, considering his crime could have been fatal.

  1. Where's the one comment that was attached to this article? Seems like a lot of comments have been disappearing on the Sun site lately.

I agree with Iole, Margarito should have got at least two years and probably three for his crime.

  2. Margarito's a bum. Good riddance.

  3. Arum et al are being stupid and thinking he'll just fight in Mexico. Sure he can get a payday that way, but I doubt California's commission or the rest of the US would be too happy about it.
Besides, there are rumors circulating that Margarito often used that hardened crap in his gloves.

  4. I hope this suspension is just a first step. Criminal charges should be filed against Margarito and his trainer.

  5. Even if he's allowed to fight in the US again, watch Cotto murderize him for hitting him with concrete wraps in their first fight.
