A camera set up for a graduate student's research project about weasels produced a picture of another member of the weasel family. A wolverine was spotted by a motion-and-heat detecting camera in the Sierra Nevada mountain range between Truckee and Sierraville, Calif. on Thursday, Feb. 28, 2008. While some people may not think the spotting is a big deal, scientists are happy about the find because it was long-thought that the species had been driven out of the area long ago. Scientists are hoping to conduct DNA tests on hair or feces the wolverine leaves behind to determine if this particular animal is a California native. The discovery could affect land-use, depending on if the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service declares the species endangered.
