Dina Titus to host health care town hall meeting

WASHINGTON -- Democratic Rep. Dina Titus will do this week what most Nevada lawmakers ably avoided during the long hot summer of Tea Party protests: She will host an open town hall forum on health care on Monday.

The freshmen congresswoman had publicly promised her constituents in August that she would return to her Southern Nevada district in fall with a full-fledged forum.

Titus is keeping good on her word with an event from 7-8 p.m. on Monday at Temple Ner Tamid, 55 North Valle Verde Drive in Henderson.

Yes, questions will be taken and answered.

The one we’re wondering is: Has the public mood cooled on health care reform or will fall prove as hot as summer?

Discussion: 27 comments so far...

  1. Most Nevadans support health care reform and want a strong public option, so I hope Dina remembers this and ignores the tiny-but-loud teabagger minority as the rest of us ask her to get the job done.

  2. A town hall meeting about health care reform hosted by a Democrat?

Will she allow health care questions from concerned Teabaggers carrying loaded assault weapons?

  3. Medicare for all (under 65 pay premiums).

We have no need for health insurance companies.

  4. Oh Boy!!!

A Town Hall meeting hosted by a democrat!!!!!

This is my big chance to got yell and scream and wave my AK-47 in the air like Osama Bib Laden and wear my confederate flag FU t- shirt !!!!

  5. Maybe you should ask how can we get the health care the politicians have now. If they know what's best for us then ask the politicians to enroll in the public option just like everybody else that they say needs it. Guess what? that will never happen. Talk real slow to Dina, remember she is a Southerner.

  6. Let's ask her about all of her donations from Sierra Health and all the other insurance special interests in Nevada over the years.

  7. "The one we're wondering is: Has the public mood cooled on health care reform or will fall prove as hot as summer"
What the hell kind of reporting is this?

  8. I think she is brave to do a town hall about health care, good for her. I hope folks are rational and want to have an open discussion other than "I don't want government messin' with my Medicare!" I've seen some of these teabagger-type meetings, they are a farce. No one listens or has an open mind, all they want to do is yell about how their "constitutional rights" have been taken away (like none were taken away under Bush). Most of them have never even read the Constitution! If they did, they would realize there is nothing about gay marriage in it! Hopefully Dina is prepared to tell them, "Want to help lower the cost of health care? Lose weight!"

  9. Then everyone who supports a public option should shoThen everyone who supports a public option should show up and tell these "Teabaggers" to ask civil questions or sit down and shut up. These peoples concerns are real, misguided yes, but their concerns are real.

This "Teabagger" group is funded by corporate lies, so we do need real people to show up and support the public option.w up and tell these "Teabaggers" to ask civil questions or sit down and shut up. These peoples concerns are real, misguided yes, but their concerns are real.

This "Teabagger" group is funded by corporate lies, so we do need real people to show up and support the public option.

  10. Let's not make this about the victims who are all voters (democrats, republicans). Let's make this about the politicians. How about a town hall meeting about the Honest Services Statutes? YOUR RIGHT!

  11. In a perfect world EVERYONE in this country that was against health care reform would be excluded from using the public option if/when it passes.

Whether we like it or not we're all going to get a mandate... Anyone REALLY want to give your insurance company that much power???

And I don't want to hear that it was Obamacare that instilled the mandates, it was the insurance company's when THEY wrote the Baucus bill.

The ONLY reason the insurance company's came out against the Baucus bill was due to the fact the Government would not fine the citizens almost $4,000 dollars if they didn't buy what they were selling.

  12. Washington ignores the people and their desire to tweek health care and not force it on almost every one. Why doen't it cover 25 million that will not be covered in this legislation? Obama/Dems speak out of the side of their mouths - they do not want to include Republican ideas. Reid/Pelosi and the Dems want complete control of our health! That is not acceptable!
This applies to what Washington is doing:
    Capitalism and Greed: Milton Friedman

  13. Not include Republican ideas??? LOL

The Republican party is imploding on itself with lies and constant corporate talking points.

For Christ sake it was a Republican that introduced "End of life counciling" which is just help setting up a living will (Which is a great idea) and what do we get??? DEATH PANELS!!!! and everyone was forced to drop it.

Lets see, another Republican talking point is "buying insurance across state lines" only one problem with that... People will flock to the very large insurance companies that will be able to offer the lowest prices for a short amount of time while putting the smaller companies out of business. Guess what happens when all the small ones go out of business??? No competition and thus once again five years from now we are in the same position or worse.

It's not only the Republicans with this problem, it's Dems too! You can tell which ones are corporate owned... They're the ones that offer solutions with absolutely ZERO in depth analysis, give me an example of when buying thing across state lines have made a huge impact.

  14. an article in the trade press:

"We are pleased by the rejection of both the Rockefeller and the Schumer amendments containing public plan options," says Tom Currey, president of the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors, Falls Church, Va.... America's Health Insurance Plans, Washington, is also welcoming committee rejection of the amendments. "The government-run plan is a roadblock to reform," AHIP spokesman Robert Zirkelbach says.... "[W]e are very pleased with this outcome," says Janet Trautwein, president of the National Association of Health Underwriters, Arlington, Va.

The question remains are with the insurance industry or are you with American citizens???
Don't you kind of fear when the insurance industry rejoices about a law being passed?

  15. I don't agree with the previous question/statement:

"The question remains are with the insurance industry or are you with American citizens???"

You shouldn't have to be for one or the other...

We need health reform not a complete takeover of the health care system by the federal government.

  16. Well then when we do get a public option, you have every right to stay out of it. In fact I hope you will to "prove" to everyone that principles are more important than saving money and not being kicked off your medical plan like I was.

Just for getting a blood disease...

  17. Time for a quick reality check...

Assume we do get a public option and it competes with health insurance companies.

People who have preexisting conditions go to the public option for insurance and raises up the public options cost of doing business.

Who will make up the cash shortfall in the public option so they can stay in business?

  18. In the bill is also a provision that will not allow private insurance to exclude for pre existing conditions.

So you are saying that people with them don't deserve coverage? Tell me what the hell I'm supposed to do? What is your solution for me? Die?

  19. and not to mention, Fed Ex and UPS seem to do very good with our Public Option post office in service...

  20. Wait, I'm going about this the wrong way.

Then I would be happy to pay more to a public plan that is going to get me more care for my money. I don't want anyone profiting from my sickness.

So the answer is, fine raise my rates to pay for my preexisting condition but don't skim 20% off the top for profit.

  21. I want businesses to profit from my business with them. I want them to profit so they can continue in business and serve me when I need their services.

When a business profits, they improve and expand their business. The hire more employees and pay better benefits.

Competition keeps prices competitive and businesses must adapt in order to survive.

I want the professionals that I do business with to profit so they can afford to improve their skills and expertise.

  22. The public option will be a self sustaining service, you don't have to pay for me to send a package with the post office just as you will not have to pay for me to get insurance. The insurance companies will NOT accept me for ANY price.

You did not answer my question, what am I supposed to do? I have a two year old to take care of, would you rather me obtain services without insurance and then claim bankruptcy so you will have your taxes raised to pay for me?

  23. Most of you are dead set on govt. run healthcare and can only call those of us who don't agree with you derogatory names...typical when you don't have facts or truths to back up an argument. The republicans DO have a bill, but you obviously havn't heard anything about it because the media fails to do any objective reporting. We do not want govt. run because the govt. cannot run anything efficiently...it always costs more than what the private sector can provide. Govt. run means more taxes regardless of what the Pres. says. He also said unemployment would not go over 8% and we have 13.9% here in Clark Co. Lets reform what's wrong....allowing sale of insurance across state lines, so there would be more competition, have some policies that accept pre-existing conditions, but this complete overhaul that no one in Congress has even read, but that Reid is ready to jam down our throats is just not right. People are desparate for JOBS, not govt. run health care.

  24. The meeting was infiltrated by a hate-talk radio personality who was given a local radio show because she was the girl friend of the communications director of the NPI- Nevada Policy Institute.

Hate talk radio has a coordinated plan to disrupt town hall meetings.

  25. i do not see why we do not have a government plan. Medicare fraud is at about 60 Billion a year. this would quadruple fraud in America, and you can not get more American than that. What do you think Congress is all about? the AP Fact Check puts insurance profits at 2-3% which is just as out of align as are pension funds. this is great as we are running out of the rich people monies and now we can go after the middle class. they have been using their home equity as an ATM, well let us take that and all of their inheritance going to their children who will spend it stupidly any how and we can wisely use it for free breakfast, lunch and dinner at schools. we need more public housing....you owe us and we have a right to your money.

  26. hello people....70% of this country is on Medicare, Medicaid, Kaiser, Blue Cross ect....30% are on private insurance.....we have a government where billions are defrauded continually from Medicare and you want to turn over more to the inept jokers? reform yes but give me a break. look at the states that are swimming in debt are all controlled by state public employee unions. look at Detroit or the whole state of Michigan as a grand failure of government. Kakistocracy is the word you are looking for, analphabets masquerading as the cognoscenti....i have repeated this because people....it is the electorate that is the problem....now go home and do some research on this
