WASHINGTON — Senator John who?

Radio ads are going up today in Iowa to introduce the state to Republican Sen. John Ensign in advance of his arrival there next week.

Ensign is scheduled to make a swing through the Republican-heavy northwestern part of the state in what many in Washington see as a test for a possible presidential run in 2012. Ensign has not discouraged such chatter but maintains he’s concentrating on his job in the Senate.

The Nevada Republican is visiting at the invitation of the American Future Fund, a conservative group. He will stop at a bio tech firm in Sioux City; an ice cream shop, Le Mars (the ice cream capital of the world), and deliver an address in Sioux City as part of the group’s conservative lecture series.

The group’s spokesman Tim Albrecht said the radio ads were a first as the group wanted to seize “a very special opportunity to highlight the most conservative senator in the most conservative part of the state.”
