WASHINGTON -- Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and other Democratic lawmakers headed to the White House this afternoon for a briefing with the president on the war in Afghanistan.

Reid said President Barack Obama discussed the Afghanistan war in an earlier phone call, a conversation Reid called “typical Obama ... very thorough.”

Congress has been anticipating the president’s proposal for increasing troops in Afghanistan as the military’s focus shifts to the ongoing violence there.
