Housing forum set for April, bankruptcy measure stalls

WASHINGTON — A controversial housing foreclosure bill that could help Nevadans at risk of losing their homes has stalled in the Senate until next month.

The bill would give judges authority to rework mortgage contracts when homeowners file for bankruptcy. It passed the House, but faces a steep climb in the Senate where it is opposed by both Democrats and Republicans who worry it will lead to higher home loan costs.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said the bill is not likely to come before the chamber until mid-April. An effort to advance the bill earlier this week was blocked by Republicans.

“We re certainly trying,” Reid said. “It’s something so important. In the states that are hardest hit – Nevada, Arizona, California, Florida, Michigan and others, this is what is needed to really speed up this recovery.”

Meanwhile, Democratic Rep. Dina Titus announced that she will be hosting a housing fair in April in Las Vegas.

Banks, mortgage servicers and counselors familiar with government aid programs are expected to be on hand to answer homeowners questions about their loans.

The workshop is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on April 18 at Desert Breeze Community Center, 8275 Spring Mountain Road.
