Romney declared winner

Although few results are known, but the Associated Press and a handful of news networks, including Fox News and MSNBC, have declared Mitt Romney the winner of the Nevada caucus.

With just 29 of 1,789 precincts reporting, the former Massachusetts governor holds a wide lead with 43 percent of the vote, followed by John McCain at 15 percent and Ron Paul with 13 percent. For up to the minute Republican results, visit http://www.nvgopcaucus.com .

Romney is leading in every county that has reported results thus far but Esmerelda County, where Paul has the lead.

In recent days, Romney canvassed the state while his two primary rivals – Mike Huckabee and McCain – focused on South Carolina, which is holding its primary today. South Carolina is viewed as a more critical contest; every Republican nominee since 1980 has won that state.

Early this morning, Romney visited a polling site in Las Vegas to push his candidacy.

Romney’s third son, Josh, told the Sun this morning that the campaign will hold a celebration in Las Vegas later today, although is father is already on a flight to Florida.
