Nevada redux

Several of the leading players in the dogfight between Illnois Sen. Barack Obama and New York Sen. Hillary Clinton here in Nevada have moved on to the next battlegrounds: Ohio and Texas.

Pilar Weiss, political director of the Culinary, which backed Obama, and Robby Mook, Clinton's Nevada state director, are in Ohio. Mook is Clinton's state director there now.

It was Mook who made the shrewd move here to expand the voter universe. He and Sen. Harry Reid were about the only people who thought more than 100,000 people would show. By upping his turnout estimate, Mook got his staff and volunteers to go out and find more supporters, which put Clinton over the top.

Clinton has maintained a slim lead in Ohio, though it has come down significantly in the past month.

If Mook can help her win Ohio, look for him to be the newest star of the the small and incestuous world of political consultants, and field professionals especially.

He's the only Clinton hand to have won a caucus this cycle. He faces a tough Obama grassroots crew in Ohio, led by his Iowa director Paul Tewes (who also spent about 10 days here in Nevada.)

David Cohen, Obama's Nevada state director, is now in Texas. After Nevada, he became state director in Connecticut, which was a key super Tuesday victory for Obama, and then went on to Wisconsin, where Obama won decisively. Obama leads in polls in Texas, though it's tight.
