It was an emotional day at the Board of Regents meeting today at UNLV, where several regents broke down as the board said goodbye to four of its 13 members.

"I'm honored and humbled to have sat in this chair for 10 years," said Steve Sisolak, whose voice cracked as he bid farewell to fellow regents. He will be leaving the board to join the Clark County Commission.

Regents Chairman Michael Wixom, who shed some tears, said of Sisolak, "The students are No. 1 in every issue in his mind."

"I don't know anyone who's been as much a tenacious defender of the students."

Other regents departing are Thalia Dondero, a former Clark County Commissioner, Howard Rosenberg, a UNR professor, and Bret Whipple, an attorney and certified public accountant.

Dondero and Rosenberg are out on term limits. Whipple lost his re-election race.

Today, regents are wrapping up their last regular meeting before the new year, when new regents will join the board.
