All attention is on Iowa and New Hampshire right now, so there has been a lull in presidential campaigning in Nevada. But Hillary Clinton's campaign announced a new TV spot http://www.hillaryclinton.com/video/93.aspx this morning, and when it airs on Monday, it will be the first Democratic campaign ad to mention a Nevada issue. Sen. Barack Obama was first to go on television here, and Clinton followed close behind. Both campaigns, though, have been running ads that have run elsewhere, focused on national issues.
The new Clinton spot says she Clinton stood up for a variety of needs, including health care and veteran's benefits. It ends with her opposing Yucca Mountain as a nuclear waste respository.A version http://www.hillaryclinton.com/video/92.aspx of the same ad started airing in South Carolina on Thursday, but it doesn't mention Yucca Mountain.
Nevada's caucus was conceived as a gateway to Western issues, but so far, the stump speeches and debates have mostly looked at national concerns.
Candidates have had to be pressed much about state issues, although they certainly will be in the days immediately before the Nevada contest Jan. 19.
The candidate who has addressed Nevada issues most is Repubilcan Rep. Ron Paul, a Libertarian by philosophy. In a series of radio ads, Paul has highlighted his opposition to levying taxes on tips and his opposition to Yucca Mountain.
