WASHINGTON — Nevada Democratic Rep. Shelley Berkley has said she would lay down her life to block nuclear waste shipments to the planned waste repository at Yucca Mountain.

Now she’s taking a more pragmatic step in trying to keep nuclear energy from enjoying a renaissance.

Berkley was circulating a letter on the Hill this week with musician-turned- lawmaker Rep. John Hall, D-New York urging Democrats to prevent loans for new nuclear plants from being included in the massive energy bill the House may vote on later today.

“Expanding taxpayer support for nuclear power would be throwing good money after bad,” said the letter signed by a handful of other colleagues to Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

Berkley’s work got a notice this week in The Nation.
