Condo and hotel tower height lowered

A proposed condominium and hotel tower at the former Wet 'n Wild site south of the Sahara is no longer in the running for the title of world's tallest building.

The original project envisioned a 1,888-foot resort tower. But McCarran International Airport and the Federal Aviation Administration said that height -- three miles from the airport -- would be a hazard to aircraft.

Clark County commissioners today approved a tower at a height of 1,064-feet, just lower than the Stratosphere. The developers are considering building a second tower as well, but that will require another public hearing.

Residents of neighboring Turnburry Place, a complex of four hi-rise condominium towers, got the developer to agree to meet with a group of neighbors throughout the development of the project. The developer also agreed to limit construction activity during night hours.
