Tom Tancredo on Abortion

(Tancredo dropped out of the presidential race for the Republican nomination on Dec. 20, 2007. See a video of his explanation on his campaign Web site.)

He says the innocent unborn enjoy a God-given right to life. Roe v.Wade is a scar on the moral and intellectual history of the country; but, contrary to popular belief, overturning it would merely permit and not require states to prohibit abortion, he said. To protect life, he advocates educating the public about "the second victim of abortion," the mother who is subject to potential life long medical and emotional scarring. As President, he would appoint strict constructionists who honor the separation of powers and respect democracy.

Tancredo's campaign Web site: "As a devout Christian, father, and grandfather, I am a strong believer in the right to life for the unborn child.

For years, activist judges have undermined life. As president, I would stop this by appointing strict constructionists as judges, reining in the power of the judiciary, and supporting constitutional amendments that respect life.

YouTube video: On what he thought of the possibility of Roe v. Wade being overturned: "After 40 million dead because we have aborted them in this country, that would be the greatest day in this country's history when that, in fact, is overturned." — 2007 GOP primary debate, at Reagan library, hosted by MSNBC May 3, 2007.
