Angle, Reid have new ads in Senate race

Two new television ads debut in the U.S. Senate race today.

Republican Sharron Angle is sticking to her strategy of enflaming voter anger toward illegal immigrants and relying on the factually-shaky claim that Democrat Harry Reid voted to give tax breaks and Social Security benefits to illegal immigrants. (In the 2006 immigration debate, Reid favored allowing illegal immigrants who gained legal status access to the same tax breaks and Social Security benefits other citizens enjoy.)

Reid has an interesting rejoinder.

While Angle calls him the “best friend an illegal alien could have,” Reid parries with his own ad accusing Angle of being a “foreign worker’s best friend” for opposing an education funding bill that would have eliminated tax breaks for overseas companies.

  1. Do we cast blame to the politcians or should we cast blame to the constituents and those who don't vote? Food for thought.

  2. How can anyone have passion and respect for a politician who has voted himself a golden parachute upon his departure? Reid will be laughing all the way to the bank when he is defeated. His only loss will be his ego.

  3. Steve, the People who haven't voted for years are now awake. And we will be voting!

Suddenly-awakened citizens finally realized that Harry Reid no longer represents us.

We may not be able to do anything about all the money ol' Harry accumulated during his years of service to himself, but at least he will be gone.

  4. We need to disregard the campaign rhetoric. The best way to judge a candidate is by their past record. Angle's past record is very conservative. Reid's past record is very liberal. Reid has pushed the socialist agenda of Obama all the way. That, alone, is reason enough to boot him out. Yes, he is wealthy. We can't do anything about that. He has used his Senate position to enrich himself and his relatives.

  5. Everybody wants to put blame on some one else. The one thing that the voters should not forget is that it was the Republicants that stole the vote from Vice President Al Gore that got us into this mess in the first place, that was just more Republicant maneuvering and a sham delivered to us by (G W Bush) the Republicants. We all are enduring the failed policies of the Republicants and should not forget that Nov 2nd, they have all ready put us on notice that these policies will be back in full force.

  6. I want to pose a question to the "conservative" posters here. If a rich man says "make me wealthier because its in your best interest" why on earth would you believe him? The right starts from the premise that "greed is good" and that by making the wealthy wealthier, they will repay it by spreading the wealth. Without looking at who initiated policies, we can see that taxes were increased in '93 and unemployment fell steadily for 8 years (but major spending cuts occurred 3 years later and so were at best a minor contributing factor). Taxes were cut in '01 and unemployment rose for 3 years, dropped for 3 years but never reached the low of Jan '01 (and deficits were never addressed during the 8 year period).

  7. Just some additional facts about the campaign and what it will mean for the ultimate winner. Of Angle's top 20 contributors, not one is a business or individual with its principal operations in Nevada, and all but 3 are PAC's or other lobbying/political groups. (These are direct contributions and doe not include funds spent directly by those groups.) On the other side, the vast majority of Reid's contributors are Nevada based businesses, and despite all the anti union rhetoric, not one is a union.

My conclusion is that Reid would be heavily influenced by Nevada businesses (which from my perspective is a bad thing) and Angle would be influenced by national political groups (and from my perspective this is a worse thing).

  8. If you think Citizens United is having no impact or that the effect is balanced, check out Monday's Washington Post piece:

"Interest groups are spending five times as much on the 2010 congressional elections as they did on the last midterms, and they are more secretive than ever about where that money is coming from.

"The $80 million spent so far by groups outside the Democratic and Republican parties dwarfs the $16 million spent at this point for the 2006 midterms. In that election, the vast majority of money - more than 90 percent - was disclosed along with donors' identities. This year, that figure has fallen to less than half of the total, according to data analyzed by The Washington Post.

"The trends amount to a spending frenzy conducted largely in the shadows.

"The bulk of the money is being spent by conservatives, who have swamped their Democratic-aligned competition by 7 to 1 in recent weeks. The wave of spending is made possible in part by a series of Supreme Court rulings unleashing the ability of corporations and interest groups to spend money on politics. Conservative operatives also say they are riding the support of donors upset with Democratic policies they perceive as anti-business."

  9. sba:

Interesting that Harry is the focus of your blame. If you're unemployed you might want to consider that the housing bubble was the product of a Republican president and a Republican congress. The "surge" didn't work, what "worked" was paying off the insurgent leaders and that didn't really work as the insurgency is still going on.

Conversely you are correct, Angle won't be an automatic "yes". To the contrary, you'll be an automatic "no" based on her track record unless she toes the line of her contributors in order to ge re-elected. And if you think spending is out of control, you might want to look at the spending levels under the Republicans who promise to reduce the deficit but always always increase the deficit more by every measure than the democrats do.

And if you think you don't need health insurance, lets talk the first time you get a serious illness or accident!

  10. Yes, Wonder of Wonders, a Fox news poll shows Angle with a slight lead. The Fox and Fox/Rasumussen poll numbers have been outliers but hey if it makes you feel good, "whatever gets you through the night".
