Cimarron, Valley high schools dominate Vegas robot rodeo

Robot rulers: The smart kids at Cimarron-Memorial and Valley high schools ruled at this weekend’s FIRST Robotics Competition, held Saturday and Sunday in the Thomas & Mack Center at UNLV.

Reigning world champions Cimarron-Memorial won the top two awards at the Las Vegas Regional event, winning both the Regional Championship and the Chairman’s Award, the highest individual honor given to a team at the event. Cimarron will now go on to defend its title at the FIRST Championship in Atlanta, April 17-19.

Valley High School, in its first FIRST competition, made it through the qualifying rounds to advance into the quarterfinals, and was named the Rookie All-Star and presented with the Highest Rookie Seed Award.

Teams from Palo Verde, Legacy, Clark and the Southern Nevada Vocational Technical Center also advanced through the qualifying rounds before being eliminated.

This year’s robotics rodeo featured more than 1,200 students on 42 teams, including 14 teams from local high schools. The event was hosted by UNLV’s Howard R. Hughes College of Engineering.
