Ah, here’s the Rub

Vegas Saxophonist Tommy Alvarado (formerly with Barry White, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, Joe Cocker and currently with Wayne Brady at the Venetian) threw together a great blues band for a new barbecue joint in town. (Although at their prices I’d call it a barbecue restaurant – a joint is where you get cheap but tasty meat thrown down on a piece of wax paper).

The Slick Willie Orchestra played for the grand opening of Rub at the Rio Tuesday night. Blues and barbecue go hand-in-hand, like fish and chips or ham and eggs, and Slick Willie was as good as the ribs.

This was a one-night stand but Alvarado says they may be back for more gigs at the Rub in the future. Meanwhile the Slick Willie Orchestra is looking for more engagements.

The membership of the group is amorphous, changing to meet the performance schedules of the various musicians. Tuesday’s cast included Alvarado, vocalist and harmonica player Ronnie Rose, trombonist Steve Meyer, trumpet player Mike Gonzales, drummer Joel Richman, keyboardist Rob “the Hedge” Cooke, guitarist Matt Baldoni and bassist Eddie Demarino.

Check out Rub, where their motto is “Nice rack and butt.”
