El Cortez joins First Friday

Downtown's El Cortez Hotel, an official sponsor of First Friday, will now be part of the monthly art festival.

The hotel is sponsoring an Express Trolley that will shuttle First Friday goers from El Cortez at 600 East Fremont St. to First Friday's Third Street and Colorado stop.

Built in 1941, the hotel is one of few icons that has avoided implosion. It recently spent around $20 million in renovations and is part of the Fremont East Entertainment District. Members of Whirlygig, Inc., the nonprofit organization that runs First Friday, are thrilled the El Cortez is participating in First Friday. The hotel is adored by many longtime locals and will add to the low number of participating bars and restaurants. Nancy Higgins, executive director of Whirlygig, says First Friday art exhibits at the hotel will definitely be part of the plan.

Official announcements will be made at 4 p.m. Thursday at the dedication of the Aerial Gallery's mile-long Ivan Brunetti exhibit at the corner of Fremont Street and East Las Vegas Boulevard.
