Fire shuts down Lake Mead Parkway near U.S. 95 (UPDATED)

(First posted 1:46 p.m.) Two acetylene tanks caught fire at Lake Mead Parkway and Fiesta Way shortly after noon today, forcing traffic to be diverted off the thoroughfare for about two hours.

Henderson Police officers closed the on- and off-ramps of U.S. 95 at Lake Mead Parkway.

Eastbound traffic on the 215 Beltway was diverted to either southbound U.S. 95 or northbound U.S. 95. All lanes of traffic became open shortly after 2 p.m.

Henderson firefighters extinguished the flames and then poured foam on the fire to cool it, said Henderson Battalion Chief Jeff Lytle. The tanks are used in welding, although where they came from is unknown, he said.

The foam ensured firefighters that the flames were extinguished, Lytle said.
