The man suspected of shooting a 10-year veteran Metro Police officer in the leg this morning is dead, Metro Police officer Bill Cassell said a short time ago.

How the unidentified man died isn’t yet known, Cassell said.

The incident began unfolding before 7 this morning when Metro officers responded to a call of a man with a gun at the Penthouse Club, a strip club on Russell Road. The police chased the vehicle after it was spotted in the area near Durango High School.

The dark green Hummer skidded to its side in a dirt lot on Rainbow Boulevard, between Russell and Hacienda Avenue. When a Metro officer opened the vehicle’s door, shots were fired and the policeman was shot in the right leg, Undersheriff Tod Jett said. The officer was taken to Spring

Valley Hospital where he was expected to undergo surgery.

The suspect stayed inside the Hummer and SWAT officers moved in, surrounding the Hummer with its shattered windshield and tinted windows.

How the incident was resolved at about 9:40 a.m. is unclear. KLAS TV Channel 8, which was broadcasting the event live, was asked by Metro Police to stop broadcasting the unfolding scene, as police suspected the Hummer had a television, which the man inside could watch and see the officers' movements.
