An 8-year-old boy died today from injuries he received when he rode his bicycle into the path of an SUV this afternoon in North Las Vegas, according to North Las Vegas police.

The boy, who has not yet been identified, died after being transported to the trauma unit at University Medical Center, said Mark Hoyt, public information officer for the North Las Vegas police department.

The accident occurred about 1:30 p.m. in a gated community in the 1100 block of Maple Pine, Hoyt said.

A white 2007 Mitsubish SUV was traveling west in the 1100 block of Maple Pine, when the boy rode his bike south out of a driveway and into its path, Hoyt said.

The driver, a 43-year-old man who lives on the same street, was not at fault, Hoyt said.

"The boy came out of nowhere," Hoyt said.

Officers were clearing the scene this afternoon. And, although they are still investigating the accident, the driver will not face any charges, Hoyt said.

The boy's name will be released later by the coroner's office, Hoyt said.
