Turn your smartphone into a universal remote

Tyson Anderson

The AVI Shadow allows users to turn their smartphones into a universal remote.

This new device aims to help combine our many gadgets into one device. The AVI Shadow from Unify4life allows users to control all their infrared controlled devices such as TVs, Blue-ray players and home stereos through a smartphone. The AVI Shadow is a small box that, similarly to a TV remote, sends infrared signals to any compatible device to control it. The difference in the AVI Shadow is that it is controlled by a bluetooth-enabled smartphone from up to 30 feet away. With the AVI Shadow, your smartphone can become a universal remote for all your devices and unlike traditional IR remotes, the bluetooth connection between your phone and the AVI Shadow does not need a clear and unobstructed view.

The AVI Shadow is on the market and it retails for $99. Software needed to pair a smartphone to the AVI Shadow is available now for the BlackBerry and will soon be available for the iPhone and other models.

Also in Unify4life's lineup is a device similar to the AVI Shadow that can be used to open your garage door from your phone. The device is set to release this April and will retail for $30.
