You have to be creative to get a driver’s autograph

The Neon Garage in the infield at Las Vegas Motor Speedway allows racing fans to get a closeup view of the drivers and teams as they prepare their cars in the garage area. And the best place for fans to see the action is from the second floor where they look down on the work through a glass ceiling.

There is also a balcony where fans stand at a railing to wave and shout hello to their favorite drivers as they walk the short distance from the haulers to the garage. The balcony area is where I saw some of the most creative attempts at autograph seeking I have ever witnessed.

Fans would attach hats, die-cast cars, shirts or pieces of paper to strings or bungee cords and lower these items from the second floor into the drivers’ paths as they walked to the garage stalls. More than once the drivers ended up with a face full dangling odds and ends.

Here are a few sketches from today.
