SCORE off-road racing comes to the Nevada desert

On Saturday morning I drove from Las Vegas to Laughlin, Nevada to attend the season-opening SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge.

Spending a day in the desert to see these off-road racers battle the bone-crushing 6.25-mile course was well worth the 90-mile drive to this small gambling town on the edge of the Colorado River.

The Trophy-Truck division, which NASCAR driver Robby Gordon competes in, is my favorite form of off-road racing. Pole-sitter Andy McMillin of San Diego finished in the top spot on Saturday in the first leg of the Trophy-Truck race. The racing continues on Sunday and will include Robby Gordon, who has just finished competing in the Dakar Rally in Argentina. Unfortunately, Gordon will enter the race in 19th place on Sunday because his truck, driven by Steve Kendall on Saturday, finished eight laps over the time limit.

Here are a few photos from Saturday’s events.
