Phoenix Sketchbook

I drove over to Phoenix early Saturday morning to attend the Subway Fresh Fit 600. As usual, I had my sketchbook in hand as I wandered around the garage area, taking in the sights and sounds. Here are a few sketches based on the day’s events.

Kurt Busch’s troubles started early when he spun and collected Kasey Kahne. After numerous pit stops to patch his car together, Busch was able to continue racing. But his car looked more suited to compete in a figure-eight race.

Despite having surgery earlier in the week, Denny Hamlin shook off the pain and drove his car for the entire race.

You may have seen the camera shot during the race showing the insects swarming around the camera lens. A wet winter in the desert meant that everything was in full bloom. And with that came bugs, lots of bugs.
