Carl Edwards goes for broke at the Camping World RV 400

The best driver and crew chief combination in Sprint Cup racing continued its march toward a third consecutive Sprint Cup championship despite a wild, wall-banging challenge from the No. 99 car on the last lap. That was a finish that has earned its place on the highlight reels.

Camping World RV 400 finish

Sunday was a day of overcoming tremendous deficits. Carl Edwards battled back from pit road altercations with Brian Vickers and Dave Blaney, and a close call on the track with the No. 17 car, to make that go-for-broke move on Jimmie Johnson on the last lap. Greg Biffle struggled with his car all day to finish third, Matt Kenseth overcame a spin and a loose lug nut to finish fifth, Jeff Gordon battled an illness to end up in the fourth position and Clint Bowyer, who suffered a penalty for passing too early at the beginning of the race, finished 12th. The determination of these drivers coupled with the edge-of-your-seat finish made for some exciting moments at the type of track known for producing snoozers. Four of the next seven races in the Chase will be at 1.5-mile tracks. Is it time to include Bristol in the Chase?

Kevin Harvick overcame a 36th place starting spot to finish sixth. He has nine consecutive top ten finishes. I wonder who will be the first driver under this points system to win a championship without a single win in a season?

What’s happened to Joe Gibbs Racing? It’s as if a nasty Kansas twister made a direct hit on the Joe Gibbs organization. I’m beginning to think that the M&M’s logo on the No. 18 car stands for mechanical mayhem. Right now, Kyle Busch’s team just isn’t as good as the driver. I think it’s time to stick a fork in Kyle’s effort to with the championship.

Johnson’s pit crew definitely put him in the position to win today. Don’t tell me NASCAR isn’t a team sport.

What do you think of Tim Brewer? I think his technical analysis is the best we see of the networks covering this sport. His explanation of the shock absorber issue that got Juan Pablo Montoya into trouble was excellent.

  1. Chad Knaus --- the 'Master of Disaster' is on a roll again! That damn Johnson is always there at the end, always when it counts! I truly believe that Jimmy is only half of the deal, Knaus is amazing, just amazing. Da Fox! I don't like Edwards and his ego, so I am happy for Johnson, and he's being cool ---- again!

  2. Did you see the post-race interview with Jimmie? He said that Chad was more needy than his wife. It seems that Chad has the intense personality and Jimmie has the laid back personality. And that's probably why they work so well together. It's amazing that Chad started out as a diesel mechanic and now he's a two-time Sprint Cup champion. More power to him.
