Observations from Sunday’s Goody’s Cool Orange 500 at Martinsville Speedway

Who would have thought Kyle Busch AND Denny Hamlin would have won NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races this season before Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Tony Stewart? …

Reports of the demise of Hendrick Motorsports’ domination have been greatly exaggerated: All four of Rick Hendrick’s drivers finished in the top seven Sunday at Martinsville and three of the four (Earnhardt Jr. in fourth, Gordon in ninth and Johnson in 10th) are in the top 10 in points after six races. …

Nobody expects Kurt or Kyle Busch to give an inch on the track to any of their competitors, but you would think they would at least cut each other some slack. The brothers got together – again – 20 laps into Sunday’s race but both escaped without serious damage …

Kurt Busch, who was 33rd Sunday, has not had a top-10 finish since his second-place showing in the season-opening Daytona 500. …

First it was the jet fuel-like substance in Michael Waltrip’s engine a year ago at Daytona and now a Roush Fenway Racing part is found in the possession of Waltrip’s team. After the cheating incident at Daytona, does anybody really believe the sway bar incident was an “innocent mistake,” as Waltrip claims? …

The latest installment in the feud between Jack Roush and all things Toyota was just what NASCAR needed in the wake of an unusually quiet week off for Easter. …

The absurd quote of the week comes from Sprint Cup Series director John Darby who said, in dismissing the controversy between Roush and Waltrip/Toyota, “These are just stock cars and stock car parts.” Really, John? Funny, I haven’t seen many “stock” cars with front splitters or headlight decals. Or 800-horsepower engines.
