Observations from Sunday’s Kobalt Tools 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway

His aggressiveness notwithstanding, Kyle Busch looks an awful lot like the driver to beat for this year’s Sprint Cup championship. Including his victory Sunday, Busch has led a series-high 329 of 1,042 laps (32 percent) in the first four races of the season. …

Busch, 22, became the youngest driver to win a Cup race at Atlanta Motor Speedway and the first to win both the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race and the Cup race. …

I understand Atlanta’s place in the history of NASCAR (and stock-car racing in general even before there was a NASCAR), but the amount of empty seats in the main grandstand for Sunday’s race was an embarrassment to the track and the sport. …

It took Toyota 40 points races to capture its first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series victory. And they finished 1-2, to boot. …

Do you get the impression that Tony Stewart doesn’t like Goodyear tires? …

Does anybody really believe that nobody at Roush Fenway Racing had a hand in seeing that the lid for the oil tank box on Carl Edwards’ car was not secured prior to the race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway? And does anybody really believe Jack Roush’s claim that he didn’t know the removal of the lid results in a competitive advantage?

  1. Shrub is aggressive? I damn well hope so. When has the last 'passive' driver had any success? Try never!!

Smoke seems to be the only one b--ching about tires, at least to the extent that he does. What his problem is, even though I am a fan of his, escapes me. Get over it TS, everyone has the same rubber and things can always improve, that's life.

As for the 'Cat in the Hat', blaaaaagh!! It will probably be Toyota's fault that the transmission in the 99 failed as it did! Oh, whine!!

  2. Hmmmm.... If I was out there racing around at 180 mph and almost wrecking every other lap, I think I would be entitled to B**ch as much as I wanted to. Besides, its not like he the only one doing it, he's just louder and more persistent than most, which is pretty much in line with his loveable personality. :)

I loved the "Karma" reference Rowdy used about Carl's car going up in smoke, lol. I knew it was only a matter of time and a little luck before he would find victory lane, because he has more than enough talent.

  3. Canfan: You asked when the last time a 'passive' driver had any success. How about Matt "Points Racer" Kenseth -- the man most responsible for NASCAR changing the way its championship is decided?

    bh

  4. BH: If you listen to Kenseth (and Dale Jr., too!) over the radio during a race, you may get a different impression. They are usually very cool under the hot lights of a camera, but they can swear and whine with the best of 'em over the radio when their car isn't to their liking or someone rubs them wrong. As for Shrub, there is a difference between agressive driving (Stewart, R. Gordon) and youthful swagger. He beat everyone yesterday and he can either laugh at all the old farts or be a bit humble; he's not the first (or last) race driver to have an excitable ego. Let's see how he does at Infinion...

  5. Gotta disagree with you Brian, Kenseth may have a quieter personality than a lot of the other drivers, but I still believe that every one of them out there has a desire to compete and a desire to win, and that, in my mind takes aggression, not violence, aggression! Matt seems to always be there at the end of the race, and I don't see him throwing rose petals out the window as he drives, but I don't see him putting people through the wall either. Maybe it's just how one defines the word!

  6. Excellent observation about the number of fans in attendance for the Cup race. Atlanta Motor Speedway needs a new marketing department, or at the very least they need to look at how they set ticket prices. Maybe they priced out too many fans out of the market?

Diehard fans complain how the sport is moving races out of the south, now its obvious that's probably the right move given the weak attendance at AMS. Will be interesting to see how well attended the rest of the southern races are this year

  7. Canfan and rocket: When I used the word 'passive' with regard to Matt Kenseth, I was referring to his driving style during the 2003 season, when he built up a huge lead in the standings with 11 or 12 races to go and went into points-racing mode. Sorry for the confusion.
