Juan Pablo Montoya saved the best for last, establishing an unofficial track record with a lap of 186.761 mph (28.914 seconds) during the final NASCAR Sprint Cup Series testing session Tuesday afternoon at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
Montoya’s lap, in the No. 42 Texaco Dodge, was better than Kasey Kahne’s track record lap of 184.856 mph at 29.212 seconds set during qualifying for last year’s Cup race at LVMS.
Six drivers bettered the official track record during Tuesday afternoon’s session. A.J. Allmendinger posted the second-fastest lap of the test (185.752/20.071) in a Toyota and was followed by Casey Mears (185.344/29.135) in a Chevy, Kahne (185.217/29.155) in a Dodge, Reed Sorenson (185.058/29.180) and Elliott Sadler (185.008/29.188) in a Dodge.
Jeff Burton scraped the wall between the third and fourth turns in the morning session and Tony Stewart and Michael Waltrip were involved in separate incidents in the afternoon. No drivers were injured.
Sprint Cup Series testing moves to California Speedway in Fontana on Thursday and Friday. LVMS hosts Nationwide Series testing Wednesday and Thursday.
