Edwards sets fast time

Carl Edwards became the first driver to surpass the 184-mph mark during the second day of NASCAR Sprint Cup Series testing Tuesday at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Edwards, driving the No. 99 Office Depot Ford, clicked off a lap of 184.256 mph (29.307 seconds) during the morning session. Edwards was just shy of the track record of 184.856 mph (29.212 seconds), set by Kasey Kahne in qualifying for last year’s LVMS Cup race.

For the second consecutive day, Toyota was near the top of the speed chart as David Reutimann (183.986/29.350) and Kyle Busch (183.892/29.365) were second and third Tuesday morning.

Matt Kenseth, in a Ford, and Tony Stewart, in a Toyota, rounded out the top five.

The only incident in the morning session came when Jeff Burton scraped the wall between the third and fourth turns. Burton was not injured.

Sprint Cup testing concludes Tuesday evening and the Nationwide Series (formerly known as the Busch Series) drivers will take to the 1.5-mile track Wednesday and Thursday.
