Earnhardt Jr. favored to win Daytona 500

Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s dominating victory in Saturday night’s Budweiser Shootout has led Station Casinos oddsmaker Micah Roberts to install Earnhardt as the favorite to win Sunday’s Daytona 500.

Earnhardt, who opened at 8-1 to win the 500, is now listed at 5-1 to win the 50th running of the Great American Race. Jimmie Johnson, the opening favorite at 5-1 and polesitter for the 500, is now listed at 6-1 along with Tony Stewart.

Michael Waltrip, who will start on the outside of the front row for Sunday’s race, dropped from 100-1 to 40-1 to win the race.

Before they run the 500, however, all drivers will take part in one of two 150-mile qualifying races Thursday that will determine the remaining 41 starting positions for the Daytona 500.

Earnhardt (8-5) and Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jeff Gordon (9-5) are favored to win their respective qualifying races.
